i am not getting the hibernate tab in power options.
it was there previously. but its not there after i formatted and reinstalled
windows. so my laptop does support hibernate.
also the standby button in shutdown menu appears greyed out.

any pointers on how to get the hibernate tab?

Right click on your desktop, select properties, click on screen saver, click
on the power... in the monitor power section. A new window should popup with
the tabs: Power Schemes, Advanced, Hibernate, and UPS. Select the Hibernate
tab and check Enable hibernation for the ability to hibernate your machine.
By default, hibernation is turned off which is why after reformatting your
machine you need to follow the steps above to enable hibernation.

Whoops forgot, after you check Enable Hibernation click on Apply in the
bottom right corner of the dialogue box and then click on Ok after the
hibernation ability has been applied.

After you installed XP, you needed to install drivers and specialized
software (such as the power management software). Go to the laptop
mftr.'s tech support site for your specific model laptop, download all
drivers and laptop software, and install them.
