Not enough system resources

I have a big machine (2.8 ghz proc. 1.5 gig ram 800 mhz
buss, 80 gig serial HD) and it gives out when attempting
to fill excell formulas at the same time as a machine that
is much smaller. I bought the new one for the purpose of
running a spreadsheet that is about 200 columns by 65K
rows. When I get to row BN or so I cannot fill the
formulas down anymore, this happens on both machines. The
new one runs XP OS and office XP, the old one is all 98 se
stuff. I receive a "Not enough system resources" error.
I understand that my RAM is different than system
resources but I was led to beleive the 16bit (64K) system
inherent to the windows9x systems was fixed with xp
alowing greater RAM addressing, and therefore more system
resources. the computer runs at 50% in the resource
manager at the most. But I get this error at the same
point in either machine. The spreadsheet without all
colums filled is about 100M, but that is only 1/24th of
what I am trying to do (there are 6 sheets). If there is
a better spreadsheet program let me know, or if I should
try changing settings etc.

Thanks in advance.

Hi N_leeson7,
about 200 columns by 65K
rows. When I get to row BN or so I cannot fill the
formulas down anymore,

If you copy your formulas down to get 65K of them and they are largish
formulas, you could try defining a name instead of a (repeating)
formula.

- Select the first cell with the formula
- copy the formula from the formula bar
- From the menu: Insert, name, define
- Enter a name (e.g. MyFormula)
- paste the formula into the Refersto box

Now overwrite the formula in your cell with =MyFormula and copy that
one down.

If you use defined names a lot, consider downloading the
Name manager (by Charles Williams, Matthew Henson and
myself) from:

www.jkp-ads.com

or

or from:

Hi Nick,

Sounds like you have hit the Excel memory manager limit: see
http://www.decisionModels.com/memlimitsc.htm and associated pages

Excel 2003 does not have this limit, but your 1.5 gig RAM probably is not
enough even with Excel 2003:

maybe there is a better way:
what are you doing that requires so many formulae?

Charles
