Am experiencing intermittent connectivity to web sites - a page like google
may load perfectly fine one session and then in the next error out on 'The
page cannot be found'. The connection is solid but i.e. seems to randomly
pick and choose which pages to load which session. Another example, I can
load microsoft.com but not windows update. Firefox on the same computer
behaves the same way. System is clean of spyware and viruses. Host file is
clean. Other ideas? Thanks

Hi,
Try clearing the cache (TIF) and History from Internet Options> General.

Or, the appropriate (for your OS) winsock repair tool may help:

LSPFix- all versions of Windows http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.zip

WinsockXP Fix- WinXP http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
Also, with instructions, at http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/winfix.shtm

Winsock2 Fix- Win98, ME
http://www.bu.edu/pcsc/internetaccess/winsock2fix.html

From LavaSoft- all versions of Windows-
http://digital-solutions.co.uk/lavasoft/whndnfix.zip

Hope this helps,
Don

I am having the same problem, as is a neighbor. The problem started after
loading SP2. I have tried all of the suggested fixes- clearing history and
cookies, allowing popups, lowering security settings, resetting connections.
I installed Firefox - same thing. I also tried a winsock repair tool as you
suggested. Nothing has worked. The problem is very frustrating. As the
initial poster states it is unpredictable. A site may be fine, yet a few
minuites later it cannot be accessed. The problem is definately local. My
other computers behave the same way but not in synch. When I can't access a
site on one, I can on another.

I'm seriously considering switching to Linux, or just going over to Apple.
Every time I load up Microsoft fixes something else fails. It takes hours to
research and try different solutions. I just don't need this.

Jerry, FYI the problem computer in initial message also recently had SP2
installed. So maybe a common denominator?

Yes, SP2 caused the problem. I have done a Google search and the problem is
referred to on several forums. It goes by many names. Apparently Microsoft
Tech has not yet made the connection. On this forum alone there are a number
of references to it under different headings. My neighbor did find a quick
one time per site fix. If you cannot get to a site run: ipconfig /flushdns.
Now you can access the site, but you have to run it on every instance.

See
Dealing with Unwanted Malware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

**Post your HijackThis log to

Alternative download pages for Ad-Aware, Spybot, HijackThis and CWShredder
may be found on this page:

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of the programs
below, download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

If nothing there helps, please post back to this thread.
