Hey,

I have inherited a Win2K network with GPO already in place. At present
users are unable to view jpeg images the system advises that there is no
registry entry i.e file association. I have looked through the GPO but can
not locate a specific entry that relates to jpeg images, I know it's a bit of
a long shot but does anyone have any ideas which part of the GPO could be
causing this or how I can simply add a file association back into the
workststion via the GPO, all help is much appreciated :)

There is no GPO to do this.
Your best bet would be to create a .reg file that creates the entries for
you, but the entry itself would be determined by the jpeg viewing software
you have installed.
A safe bet would be to set iexeplore.exe to open the jpeg files (most, if not
all PC's will have this)
Try looking in HKCR for jpg and jpeg once you have set the file associations
on one machine. Export these keys to a .reg file then call regedit /s from a
startup script to import the entries in the .reg file you created earlier.

Thanks for the reply Andrew, however it has to be the GPO causing the problem
as if a user logs onto the same machine and does not have any GPO's
associated to them they can open jpeg files up perfectly :( This is driving
me nuts, in the mean time I'll follow your advise and try the reg hack, again
many thanks.

The only way I can think that a GPO would be affecting file associations is
through a GPO based software distribution. In this case it would be the
software package, and not the GPO causing the problem.
Are you deploying any applications via GPO?

Yes we are:

Win2K SP4
Office 2000 SR1
Acrobat Reader 5
Foxpro 7 and 8 Runtime
Flash Player
VNC

That having been said this is assigned to the computer, and when a user who
has the base netwrok GPO assigned to them they fail to open a jpeg, but if
another user logs in who does not have it assigned they can open the jpeg :(
I am at a loss to be honest you are confirming what I thought there is no
setting that should be doing this, but somrthing in there is obviously doing
it, so I think I'm going to try your reg hack theory and see if that works :)
Thanks again.
