Brian

We are on a peer to peer network and normally whenever I
set-up a new pc on the network all I have to do is make
sure it has a valid ip address, subnet mask, gateway, and
dns servers and then you can access our network and the
internet. Once I plug in the ethernet the pc is on the
network and you can see everyone else. For some reason
this new Win2K pc I just set-up gets on-line just fine
through the network but I am unable to see anyone else or
map to anyone else on the network. If anyone knows what
I'm missing please let me know.
Thanks,
Brian

Firstly i assume you can ping another machine by ip
address? if not it could be your NIC or driver.

Can it resolve the hostnames of the other PC's on your
network at the command prompt/ping? if not it could be
your name server settings.

more than likely though it's just trying to find all the
PC's on your network (explorer uses netbios to resolve
names). Netbios can take several hours to hold it's
election and sort itself out when a new machine comes on
the net.
Windows machines prioritise who is 'browse master' by the
a number of factors including what OS they are running.
But if your NIC is working correctly you should start to
see machines within a few hours at most.

Better to set up your machines to use a WINS server and
set your node type on all machines to use that alone. That
way you cut down the trafic generated by browser elections
and general 'who is' type traffic, and speed up name
resolving.

Thanks Mark.

Make sure all computers are in the same workgroup and that all useraccounts
exist on all computers (W2K/XP's). Got File- and printersharing loaded? Is
Netbios over TCP/IP enabled (Advanced properties of TCP/IP, tab WINS)?
