Shawn

When I'm on one of my schools sites I am not able to
click on/open the icons that will show me my lecture
notes or for the discussion board. These are icons that
show the little hand when you move your cursor over it.
There are other links that I can expand on this site but
a couple that I cannot. When I click on it nothing
happens it doesn't even try to load it, it's like
clicking on nothing even though when my cursor is over it
it shows an address on the bottom of the browser. It's
only on my computer as well for I can open these
icons/links on other computers. I thought it would be a
security setting but I don't know exactly what setting it
would be. Please help. Thank you

Hi Shawn. I've been dispensing this advice to many
others. I'm no expert, just reporting own (successful)
resolution of what I suspect is a similar problem.

I first noticed something was wrong when I couldn't get
to the NYU home page from my home computer, even though I
could get to other NYU pages & had no problem using my
computer ar work. I originally thought the problem was
strictly between me & NYU & dial-up service (at work I
have DSL). They kindly spent a lot of time on the phone
with me about it; I must have gone over all the various
security settings at least 20 times each, took off the MS
firewall, etc. It wasn't until I tried to access my
credit card account online that I realized the problem
was in connecting to any secure site. More security
setting. Won't give you the whole story, but..sound
familiar?

My problem was that in Internet Explorer my "cipher
strength" was set at 0 bits & you need 128 bits. Cipher
strength is really just one more security setting, but
one you can't manually adjust. You can check yours by
opening IE (it doesn't matter if you're not actually
online) and then clicking on Help & then About IE. This
shows you all the basic info about IE on your computer.
A few lines down you'll see cipher strength.

If it says it = 128 bits, I've wasted your time & don't
know what to tell you, but if it doesn't, you need to get
the update appropriate to your operating system. You can
download these for free from the Microsoft download
center. It gets more complicated if you're using Windows
XP. I've given XP suggestion to many recent postings
that have subject lines about "can't access certain
sites" or "can't download IE6" & if you need this
additional info you can probably find it there. If your
operating system is XP & your cipher strength = 0, you
need this info. If you can't find it among replies to
already posted messages, post one that says something
about XP SP1 in the subject line & I'll give you the rest
of it.
