Not able to connect to network

This is driving me crazy!
Vista recognizes the network adapter (on board, Leadtek motherboard), but
neither will it get a DHCP address (even though XP does on the very same PC!)
nor will it work, when I enter a static IP address. I can ping my own address
but nothing else (no problem under XP). I disabled the firewall on Vista
completly, so that should not be a problem. I even tried it by setting the
adapter parameters for speed and half/full duplex on different values.
I can see an established link, but the statistic information of the adapter
(over properties) shows no packets received and none sent.
Anyone here with an idea that might help?

kind regards
Jancsi

Usually, when I run into this problem, because I have extras sitting around,
I install another NIC (just in case) to see if it works. Use a NIC that you
know works with Vista. Use the same cable that you are using now. Use the
same port on whatever router/switch/hub you are using now. Use a process of
elimination to work out where the problem is.

I know it sounds like a lot of work, but I find that, once I know that it
isn't the cable or the port in which I am trying to use are not "bad" in
whatever way, then I can go from there with the least amount of work...

Thanks for that answer! Very fast!!! :-)
Thought of that yesterday, too. But till now I have no PCI ethernet card. So
I hoped for another solution/possibility. But this is definitly worth a try!
Hope that Vista will let me do that. During the tests I had the problem that
in three of four attempts to configure my card the dialogbox will turn to "no
response" and I am not able to close it.

Hmmm...I haven't had any problems with Vista on NICs, so I really don't know
what to say, and I SHOULD probably shut up while I'm ahead...

Another thing I have found in my many beta tests of OSs, is that SOMETIMES
it is better to go through your bios settings and disable ALL of the
peripherals (NIC, sound, (leave the VGA on if you have onboard VGA,
obviously) VGA, Firewire, USB, etc) and then, after I've installed the OS,
start, one by one, enabling those, installing the drivers one at a time.
THAT way, when you find a problem, you MIGHT find that ONE item is
conflicting with another. Windows XP was pretty famous for saying there
were no conflicts with other hardware even when there obviously were.

Try going into your network connection properties and disabling TCP v6.
I did that and the network appeared to Vista.

Thank you, too! that was the first thing I did and it was the first dialgobox
that "hang". :-(
I found an "old" PCI card with an 3com chipset and that did it! It seems
that Vista has not (yet) a valid driver for the NVIDIA nForce Networking
Controller on board my K7NCR18D Pro II board. :-/
But know I'm able to connect to the internet using my DSL router (as you can
see, because I'm using Vista right now!!). So the other hardware / drivers
should be a piece of cake.... ;-)

Glad I could actually be of help...lol

Thing is though that MY nvidia NIC works fine on vista, though I had to go
get nVidia's beta vista driver for it to do so...maybe try doing that.

Do you know how to deinstall the driver of the on board NIC? Everytime I try
it the system said, that this driver could not be deinstalled because it may
be essential for booting, even though the driver is marked with a yellow
exclamation mark (I tried to install a "new" driver and this corrupted it, I
think). All I could do was disabling the hardware. Any ideas?
