I am using Windows XP with Internet Explorer6 (Dell Computer with Pentium 4
proceesor and 256 MB Ram). Recently, I switched to DSL broadband. The modem
supplied with the DSL is having inherent firewall. As I was having problem
with browsing in general, I disabled/un-installed all the firewall
software-antivirus,adaware etc.from my computer. I am still facing the
problem as follows: 1. After opening internet mail inbox, and after opening
first mail, I am not able to do anything. Which ever button I click, there
is no action as if all the buttons are disabled.
2. I am not able to upload most of the log on screens of web applications
and those where data input is required like for bill payments. After some
time after clicking "Submit", the window is exhibiting "This page cannot be
displayed" page. I bypassed the firewall on the broadband modem and
tried. But, there is no improvement.
3. I tried to browse with "FireFox" and the problem remains. On repeated
consultation with broadband provider regarding modem and its security
systems, they told that it is a problem with computer operating system (modem
firewall was bypassed and checked)
4. I tried all the tricks with IE6 and Firefox by keeping security levels
low for internet zones
Can any one please analyse the problem and give me solution.

Did you install the filters? Or, you may have a faulty modem. Did it give
you a problem from the start, or did it once work properly? Did you go
to: Start>All Programs>Accessories>Communications>Network Connections
and/or Network Setup Wizard? Have you tried any troubleshooting? Have
you checked Google for possible similar situations?

Hi Gumm,

1> Try to follow all the steps mentioned in the article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/870700
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/813444
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326155

2> Try safemode with networking and check
If it works fine in safemode follow step 3

3> Steps to perform a clean boot in Windows XP (Ref:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353)

Step 1: Start the System Configuration Utility
Click Start, click Run, type msconfig , and then click OK.

The System Configuration Utility dialog box appears.
Step 2: Configure selective startup options
1. In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click the General tab,
and then click Selective Startup.
2. Click to clear the Process SYSTEM.INI File check box.
3. Click to clear the Process WIN.INI File check box.
4. Click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
5. Click the Services tab.
6. Click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box.
7. Click Disable All, and then click OK..
8. When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.

Note: If you get Access denied error message dont worry just click "OK"

3> Click "Dont show this message again" then "OK", if you get a windows
which says you have used system configuration utility to make changes.

4> Try to browse using Internet explorer and check.

Thanks & Regards
Bob

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I installed the fileters supplied by the ISP provider. I don't think modem
is faulty since the same modem is working on wireless networking with a
laptop at my home.
I am facing this problem from start. I set up the network using the CD given
by the ISP. I also tried as per the procedure from Windows, but with the
same result. I tried many trouble shooting methods by following various
articles and solutions from Microsoft knowledge base. They are
298804,305553,308022,298804,811834,307164,314095
I faced limitations in following the procedures in the following articles
175722: wsock32.dll could not be found. I am not sure if this applies to XP
811834: Resolution under method 2: The system is not available as per the
stated procedure . I enabled TLS 1.0 as per method 1.
On the advise of a network administrator, I installed and ran the spyware
and adware programs(Spybot and Adware Personal). Though these programs
removed some of the malaware, situation didn't improve.
Particular example of a site I am facing problem is: I am not able go
forward from 'log on' screen of hotmail account. I receive the message to the
effect that: client could not receive the web page, server not available, or
not connected to network
(DNS server is matching as per the ISP provider and my Local network)
However, I can try the methods suggested in articles given by Bob and post
the results here after I complete.
Thanks and Regards

Hi Bob,
I tried all the methods mentioned in articles 870700 and 813444 except
re-registering the .dll files and Cryptographic Services. I created new user
profile and tried to work on the problematic sites such as logging on to my
"Hotmail" account and "Bank Account". I tried with "Firefox" and "Opera"
also. The system is inactive after submitting the information as if it is
forzen. I could not open Yahoo mails with IE6. I downloaded IE7 and the mails
are opening with considerable time delay.

I already ran Adaware and Spyware scans with Adaware Peronal and Spybot and
removed the indicated malicious files.
One of the messages from error log is as follows:
Product: Windows Operating System
ID: 1003
Source: DHCP
Version:5.2
Symbolic Name: EVENT_FAILED_TO_RENEW
Message:Your computer was not able to renew its address from the
network(from DHCP server) for the Network Card with network address %1.The
following error occurred:%2. Your computer will try and obtain an address on
its own from the network address(DHCP) server.
Explanation:The DHCP client service on your computer did not receive a
response from the DHCP server to renew your computer's IP address lease. The
client still has a valid IP address and periodically will try to get an
address lease extension

This could be caused by network connectivity issues, a DHCP server or relay
malfunction, firewall issues, or malfunction of your computer's network
interface card or driver.
My comment: I checked up all the issues except the DHCP server functioning.
However. the ISP insists that this is a problem with my computer and demands
many dollars for resolving the issue. I have competely over-riden the
firewalls of the modem and my computer as per the articles from from MS
Knowledge base and carried out the actions there in, except 'Formating' my
hard disk and reload the OS.The problem remains as it is- I am not able to go
forward beyond some log on screens and not able to send my mails from my
email accounts.

Hi Gumm,

Goto command prompt and execute the following commands:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns

Try to access the websites and see the difference. If that did not help then
goto the following location (c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\) and delete all
the files except Networks, Protocols and Services.

Hope this might solve the problem.

Thanks & Regards

Bob,
I tried both the methods mentioned by you. I am facing the same problem as
earlier.
Meanwhile, I ran diagnostics through tool availabel with "Help and Support"
of Windows XP.
It was run for Internet Diagnosics. I got 'failed' alert for "Net Work
Adaptor/IP Address". All other items were indicated as 'success' including
DNS server. Device Manager is indicating that network adaptor - in this case
'RealTek NIC' is working properly.
I ran the 'msconfig' and disabled all third party services through guided
help of MS Knowledge base without any positive results.
I think the final option left to me is to re-format the hard drive and
reload Windows XP.
Thanks and Regards,
Murthy

I am having similar problems. I had XP Home and did a Windows Update along
with other updates and Web Access is now continually denied. IE, Firefox and
IM all stoped at once. IE and Firefox find the webpage, but no webpage opens
excpt the stored local version. We can ping the ISP and websites and get
responses and the network connections work. The other two computers on the
home router have no problems accessing the web. Applications that do not
require web page access update fine, e.g., SUN and Adaware. However, Windows
and MacAffee don't since they require web page access.

I have turned off all firewalls and had a computer friend look at it and
nothing. Last night, I went ahead and bought the Windows XP Pro upgrade in
an attempt to overwrite XP home, and still no web page access.

Help would be appreciated

Dave,
I am not able to get over with the problem still. If I find a solution, I
will post it here.
Meanwhile you can try all the tricks from the articles mentioned in this
message board. Microsoft Knowledge base is a good place to start with.

Finally, I had to format the hard drive and re-install Windows XP to come out
of the problem. Now, the system is working well. I installed the Windows XP
updates including SP2 one by one to see whether there is any effect. I didn't
notice any problem. The problem could have been one of the numerous
anti-virus and anti-spyware applicaitons (as anticipitated by this forum
members through their suggestions) which I down loaded and failed to identify
to un-install
