Not able to access format settings for cell

I have a spreadsheet in 2003 that I have been using for quite awhile. The
other day I think I hit some key combination that now does not allow me to
access the format capabilities of the cells. If I trying clearing contents,
still no luck. If I copy the format from some other cell that does allow it
then Im OK. I thought maybe I accidently protected some cells, but when I
check the protection tab under tools it does not show anything. Anyone have
any ideas?

Unless he never wants to change the formatting of the cell, that sounds more
like a work-around than a cure (or at least I'd find it annoying to have to
format a cell somewhere else and then copy the format).

As for the original probem, fresh out of ideas here -- have not encountered
that problem before that did NOT involve a protected cell. Might want to
check the formula bar. If the formula bar is blank when the the cell is
selected -- with a value of some kind in the cell -- that would indicate a
hidden cell in a protected sheet.

The OP did say when s/he pasted a format "then Im OK". To me, this seems
to say that the problem was fixed by the paste. Also, the OP stated
"when I check the protection it does not show anything". This seems to
infer that the OP knows about protection.

The fact that the OP can paste a format tends to support that the cells
are unprotected. Before answering the question, I did check whether it
was possible to allow the user to set formats with paste on a locked
cell - you can guess the result. To me, this left "unknown problem". I
don't know about you but, if I could paste over my many Excel sins and
cure them, I would be absolutely delighted :-)

Devo,

If I read the scenario incorrectly, please say so. If this is the case,
like Sox, I am out of ideas and the next suggestion would be to copy
data across to a fresh sheet, pasting values and formulas only then
apply required formats in the new sheet.
