I'm not able to access almost anything on my PC. When I try to open a file or
program a message comes out telling me that probably I don't have the
necessary permissions to do so. There is only one account on my PC and I'm
the Administrator. I was without broadband for 1 month and was not able to
update the security patches. This only occurred after the first time I got
broadband back. I installed all the paths that I found on Microsoft website
on security mode but nothing happens on normal mode. Need urgent help,
please. Thanks and regards

I forgot to mention that I use Windows XP SP2, have McAfee antivirus, Zone
Alarm and Microsoft firewall and anti-spyware. Thanks.

My reply is at the bottom of your message :

Your protections seems to be good but having more than one firewall at one
time doesn't make you more protected so please turn off one of them and keep
ONLY one to prevent software crash.

Make sure your computer is clean :

Could you make this sentence clearer:

on security mode but nothing happens on normal mode

On security mode ???
what do you expect to happen in Normal Mode ???

I am not able to access internet since I cannot open any application, like
Internet explorer, and I cannot install anything on normal mode since I
cannot open any file. That was the reason why I tried to do it in safe mode.
Can you please help me? Thanks and regards.

Are you using XP Home or XP Pro?? Have you scanned for malware and spyware
lately and what were the results? In XP Home the built in administrator
account is only available in Safe Mode. If you can run the command net
localgroup administrators it will show the actual membership of the
administrators group. You could try doing a System Restore
[programs\accessories\system tools - system restore] to a point before this
all happened if you have such a restore point. You can check permissions on
folders/files as shown in the link below and take ownership as an
administrator if you do not have permissions. --- Steve

localgroup administrators"? Can I do all the instructions in safe mode?
Thanks and regards.

You should not be running Zone Alarm and Microsoft Firewall at the same
time.

In the run box type cmd.exe and then OK to bring up the command window. Then
type net localgroup administrators and hit enter. Below is an example from
my computer and it shows two users in the administrators group under
members. --- Steve

D:\WINDOWS\system32>net localgroup administrators
Alias name administrators
Comment Administrators have complete and unrestricted access to the
compu
ter/domain

Members

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Administrator
Steve
The command completed successfully.

Do not perform my malware removal instructions but boot in Safe Mode .

To do this , repeatedly press F8 while Windows is starting before the
Windows logo appears and after the BIOS is loaded. You'll open the Windows
Advanced Menu and choose " Safe Mode" . Press ENTER . Wait some time and
enter the system. Now goto Start - Programs- Accessories - System Tools -
System Restore

Restore to previous state before the problem started !

Does this help

I restore to a date where it was running (a bit more than one month ago) and
still no access.

Then it's time to do a clean install. If there is data on the drive that
you didn't back up, you can get it by using either Knoppix (a Linux
distro that runs on cd) or a Bart's PE. Doing this requires some amount
of computer skill. You know yourself best; if this isn't something you
can do then take the machine to a professional computer repair shop
(not your local version of BigStoreUSA).

http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ (Bart's PE)

Here are links about doing a clean install:
