I get the following error when I try to auto-run the May 2006 `Evaluations`
DVD (number 0429.01-English language):
`D:\ is not a valid Win32 application.`
D:\ is the DVD drive in my system. All other DVDs play well.I received this
DVD as part of my single-user Technet Plus subscription.
How do I get around this error and make the DVD autoplay?
I use Microsoft Windows XP Professional with service pack 2 as my operating
system, daily updated with Microsoft Update. As of this time, all
high-priority/recommended updates,optional software updates,optional hardware
updates and beta softwares available through Microsoft update are
installed, except for Visual Studio 2005 express editions service pack 1.No
update is available for Windows XP for my system.
My D.V.D. drive is a `Lite-On` internal half-height E.I.D.E./A.T.A.P.I.
combo drive, having model number `SOHC-5236K`.I would like to repeat here that
other DVDs autorun properly.

Hello Hiren,

Thank you for using newsgroup!

Based on your description, to provide further effective assistance, could
you help me confirm the following information so that we can narrow down
the issue?

Does the issue occur on all CDs, DVDs, and flash media cards or all other
removable storage devices?

For the current situation, I'd like to provide you with the following
general troubleshoot steps to see if the AutoPlay feature works.

Step1. Restore defaults of AutoPlay
==========
1. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
2. Under Devices with Removable Storage, right-click the device that you
want, and then click Properties.
Note: The removable storage device must be inserted in your computer to
appear in My Computer.
3. Click the AutoPlay tab, and then click Restore Defaults button.
4. Test the issue again.

Step2. Create another new user profile to test
==========
For detailed information, you can refer to the following link:
279783: How To Create and Configure User Accounts in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;279783

Step3. Safe Mode
==========
I also suggest we restart the computer in Safe Mode to see if the problem
also occurs in this mode. Safe Mode loads a minimally protected-mode
configuration, disabling Windows device drivers and using the standard VGA
display adapter.

1. Restart the computer.
2. Keep pressing F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears.
3. Choose the Safe Mode, and press Enter.

Note: Some third party applications and hardware devices cannot be used
during Safe Mode. You will temporarily be unable to connect to the Internet
while in Safe Mode.

In addition, I found the following article that might be helpful:

insert a CD-ROM in the drive

Try browsing the DVD files and taking a look at the autorun file in the
root directory of the DVD. Take a look at the file it is attempting to
run and see if you can run it manually.

CD-ROM or other disc drive cleaning
http://www.computerhope.com/cleaning.htm#04

The DVD is shiny clean.I received it from Technet Plus, less than two weeks
ago and I got this error right at the first time I tried to autorun it.I can
very well browse the contents of the disc.It is just the autorun that is not
working,I guess. There is no question of cleaning the DVD drive as other DVDs
work fine.

Many thanks for the same.Out of the four causes given on that page for this
error to occur,I find it reasonably safe to assume that cause 1 would not be
in picture here, since this is a very good TechNet Plus DVD.I do not expect a
corrupt/bad file to be in this DVD.All other DVDs I received in my Technet
Plus shipment are running fine. Also, the file pointed to in the AUTORUN file
located in the root directory does exist. It is not missing.
As for cause 2,I have tried compatibility settings one-by-one for Microsoft
Windows 95,Microsoft Windows 98/ME,Microsoft Windows NT and Microsoft Windows
2000.All of them give this same error.
As for cause 3,there is no reason to believe that could be the cause. This is
Microsoft Technet Plus media.
I eliminate cause 4 since other DVDs run fine.
Start | Run | Type: D: | Click OK and navigate to the autplay or autorun.

I already did that and therefore came to know that the autorun target
executable is not missing. It does really exist. If I try to run that
executable manually instead of auto-running,I get this very same error, except
that in the error,D: gets replaced by D:\AUTORUN\SHELEXEC.EXE,since now a
particular file is being attempted to be run instead of the whole disc
auto-playing.
Hope this helps. Let us know.

Yes,this indeed helped a lot,but my problem stays as it is.I hope I have
provided all the requisite information you need.

Hello!

Thank you for using newsgroup!

you help me confirm the following information so that we can narrow down
the issue?

Always most welcome!I would surely like to provide more detailed information
to make myself clear.
Does the issue occur on all CDs, DVDs, and flash media cards or all other
removable storage devices?

No,it is just this single DVD which is giving me problems.Other CDs and DVDs
work fine.
For the current situation, I'd like to provide you with the following
general troubleshoot steps to see if the AutoPlay feature works.

Step1. Restore defaults of AutoPlay
==========
1. Click Start, and then click My Computer.

3. Click the AutoPlay tab, and then click Restore Defaults button.
4. Test the issue again.

Thanks. But Autoplay does work very well, with other CDs and DVDs as well as
audio CDs.Also,the `Restore defaults` button is greyed-out(disabled) on my
system. So cannot really try this step.I am sure I have not customised any
autoplay setting/preference for any type of disc and have always went with
the defaults.
Step2. Create another new user profile to test
==========
For detailed information, you can refer to the following link:
279783: How To Create and Configure User Accounts in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;279783

Many thanks for the Knowledge Base link.I have already tried this before. In
fact,I always log in as a limited user instead of using the administrator
account unless absolutely necessary.I have tried auto-running the disc with
both the limited user account as well as the administrator's account. No
change. The error message remains as it is.Do you mean to say that I should
create a completely fresh user account(i.e.,one which has not been used
before) and test it for use with the autorun application?
In addition, I found the following article that might be helpful:
330135: The AutoRun feature or the AutoPlay feature does not work when you
insert a CD-ROM in the drive
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;330135

Thanks.But mine is not just a CD-ROM drive.It's a combo drive,having CD-RW
and DVD-ROM capabilities.Does this Knowledge Base article apply to such
drives too?
Thanks & Regards,

Most welcome always. Will try running this in Safe Mode and let you know soon.

Step3. Safe Mode
==========

This worked!Many thanks!
I can properly run the DVD in Safe mode.I understand that the safe mode
loads a minimal set of device drivers absolutely necessary to run Windows in
standard VGA mode of graphics.
Since this was a Technet Plus DVD there was no question of third-party
applications.I was able to properly use my combo drive to autorun the DVD in
safe mode.
I now understand that some device driver/startup file is causing problems. So
I guess I need to tinker with the startup options(like using interactive
startup to determine what is causing the error). Many thanks, once
again.Although the process may require several reboots,I need to know what
system configuration file/hardware device driver/startup program is causing
this erratic behaviour,as running in safe mode cannot be considered as a
solution. But I now know what to do,thanks to your help!

Hi Hiren,

Thanks for your response and let us know the issue does not occur in Safe
Mode. It need some time to troubleshoot this issue like you said. You may
use msconfig to narrow down the root cause.

Yes,THIS issue does not occur in safe mode. But it is pretty useless running
the DVD in safe mode since the DVD contains tons of installable software and
the Windows Installer service does not start on it's own in Safe mode(I did
not try starting it manually,though....I am unsure of whether it would). So
will have to get this working in normal mode.It sure will take time.I happen
to be a student and currently I have my year-end examinations running.
Yes,using msconfig will help.

Thanks & Regards,
Solved!I can now auto-run the DVD in normal mode.
Using msconfig helped.I found out that I just need to change from normal
startup to diagnostic startup in order to be able to auto-run the DVD in
normal mode.
But,then I found out that I cannot install some software off the DVD since
the Windows Installer service has not been started.
So I changed from normal startup to selective startup, keeping the checkbox
for all system services checked and disabling processing of the WIN.INI and
SYSTEM.INI files as well as the system startup programs.
Then I found out I am back to square one, since I again could not auto-run
the DVD and the same error message displayed itself again.
So now I again ran msconfig and under selective startup, reversed the
selection of checkboxes:Enabled the SYSTEM.INI and WIN.INI files to be
processed during boot-up and let all the system startup programs load at
boot-time,at the same time disabling all but the most-essential Windows
services.A reboot ensued.
Now I was again able to auto-run the DVD,but I found out that this did not
help, since by disabling most of the Windows services even Windows Installer
has been disabled.
So now again ran msconfig and under selective startup, let the checkboxes for
SYSTEM.INI,WIN.INI and system startup programs be as it is,then went to the
`Services` tab and selected only one service `Windows Installer` to be
enabled at system startup. Then did the usual job of `Apply` and then
`Close`,after which a re-boot ensued and now I am happily auto-running the
DVD and installing it's software in normal mode!

Oh and one more thing:My list of system services is pretty long.....there
are several system services(none of them being suspicious even in a remote
possibilty) which I think may be preventing me from auto-running the DVD if
they(i.e.,that service) have been started.Cannot pick up on the
right(here, the wrong) one.Is there any way I can provide my list of system
startup services to you so that you can tell me which specific ones might
need to be disabled instead of disabling so many of them as I have done now?

Hi Hiren,

Glad to hear that the issue does not occur in Clean Boot mode. You may
uncheck half of all services to check if the issue still occurs. If the
issue does not occur, you may repeat the process, but add one check back
each time to the list of files listed under the "Selective Startup" menu
until the issue reappears again, when this happens follow these steps:

1. Select the tab for the last file you enabled and remove the checks from
each line in that file.
2. Click the Apply button
3. Reboot your computer and verify the issue has not reappeared.
4. Replace each check mark one line at a time.
5. Click the Apply button.
6. Reboot your computer.

When the issue reappears you will then know which line or command is
causing the slow shutdown.

Thanks & Regards,

Ken Zhao

Ken Zhao

| Solved!I can now auto-run the DVD in normal mode.
| Using msconfig helped.I found out that I just need to change from normal
| startup to diagnostic startup in order to be able to auto-run the DVD in
| normal mode.
| But,then I found out that I cannot install some software off the DVD
since
| the Windows Installer service has not been started.
| So I changed from normal startup to selective startup, keeping the
checkbox
| for all system services checked and disabling processing of the WIN.INI
and
| SYSTEM.INI files as well as the system startup programs.
| Now I was again able to auto-run the DVD,but I found out that this did
not
| help, since by disabling most of the Windows services even Windows
Installer
| has been disabled.
| So now again ran msconfig and under selective startup, let the checkboxes
for
