I belive I am getting this from a secure Access 2003 MDB. But I am just
trying to open any Access 2007 file and still getting the 'logon' prompt,
follwed by the 'Not a valid account name or password. (Error 3029)'
regardless of what I try to logon with.

Any thoughts?

Thanks
Scott

How are you opening the files? Are you first opening 2007 and using the Open command? Are you opening via a double click in Windows Explorer? How many versions of Access do you have installed on your computer?

Joan,
I have tried opening both ways.
I had the trial of 2007, but now have the 2007 Enterprise ed.

Iwill go look to see if I have any 'others' floating around that I missed.

If you are getting the login prompt when you try to open *any* mdb file, then you are joined by default to a secure workgroup file. Use the workgroup administrator to rejoin system.mdw.

Ok. I see the system file. But how do I run the workgroup admin?

Thanks tons
Scott

Database Tools...Administer...Users and Permissions
or from code
Docmd.RunCommand acCmdWorkgroupAdministrator

Hi there, this sounds a little like the problem I'm having but the fix
provided doesn't seem to work for me. I've got Access 2000 and was trying to
setup user groups and permissions. I created a test user and password and
now can't get into any mdb file, getting the 'Not a valid account name or
password' error. I tried to run the system.mdw but get the same logon error.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Michael

Joan thanks much.

Once you pointed me to the file I took the easy way out.

I just deleted the system.mdw file and did my fourth or fifth reinstall and
called it good.

Michael,
do a search for the system.mdw
mine was in,
C:\Documents and Settings\ * your name etc \Application
Data\Microsoft\Access

Like I said, I just took the easy way. But I had zero files to loose if I
'broke' it. Others maybe try going in like Joan said.

Good luck and thanks for helping me get back on track.

There is more to securing a mdb than just setting up user groups/permissions. Did you start by creating a new mdw file?

If you made a backup of your mdb before you attempted security, restore that file. Then copy system.mdw from another computer.

I was able get back in by overwriting the .mdw file, thanks!
I can see now there there is more to it and that I need to do a little more
reading before trying again. Is there anywhere in particular you would
reccomend or are the help files sufficient.

Thanks gain,
Michael

I wouldn't use the Help files - they didn't help me much when I started out.
Security FAQ
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=207793

Security Whitepaper
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=148555

Although the whitepaper is old, it contains information to help you understand security.

I've also outlined the detailed steps at
www.jmwild.com/AccessSecurity.htm
and there are more links there.
