Nortons LiveUpdate fails for limited user.

Hi:

I have set up a limited user on XP Home with Norton set to do a live update.
The update seems to take place (that is I see Norton doing the update) but
the Norton Status says the definitions have not been updated. I downloaded
the Virus Definitions and then ran the updates manually with the same
results. I have signed on as the Administrator and both the above work fine
it just does not work for the limited (which is how the computer is normally
signed on with) user.

I tried several different scenarios including runas admin user but always it
does not work. After much pondering I found (by accident) that after the
limited user does the definition update I can change the status by signing
on as the Admin user, start Norton to check the status (wait 30 secs) see
the status change (no Internet activity of program running), logoff Admin
and back to limited user and status is now correct.

Can anybody explain what is happening and how I can fix this without using
the logon to Administrator?

Thanks
Bill

A limited user should not be able to install or otherwise alter software.
That's why it's called "limited" user. You (or others) should use the
administrator account to update.

Hi Tom:

Thanks for the reply. Are you saying that even though I run the program with
RunAs using the Admin user and Password that this cannot be done from a
limited user account?

Thanks

Hi:

Thanks for the reply. I have set up the schedule with RunAs using the Admin
user and Password. The part that I do not understand is why the update works
but does not show up until the Admin user signs on.

Thanks

I would assume that the reason the update doesn't show up until you logon as
Administrator is because the update wasn't actually done under the Limited
User account, but under the Administrator account after signing in as
administrator, using the RunAs command. I could be wrong, and I'm sure
someone will correct me if I am, but it seems logical to me.

Hi Tom:

That thought had crossed my mind so I scheduled a limited user update and
waited until after the update then I disconnected (unpluged cable modem,
flushed temporary files and rebooted) from the Internet. I signed on as
Admin and the status updated after the usual 30 second delay. I between each
step I waited about 10 min to ensure that all processes had completed. I
also checked the limited user before signing on as Admin and I checked the
Admin before signing on as limited. So as far as I can determine the
scheduled update by the limited user does work but the status will not
change until the Admin user signs on. There is something I am missing but
right now I do not have a clue.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks
Bill

You should probably try Symantec's support site. I couldn't find anything
related specifically to the RunAs command there, but you could e-mail their
free tech support for more information.

Hi Tom:

Thanks for your thoughts. I too have tried Symantec with similar results.
