From my post on 10/23/04, I still have open questions posed to Carey Frisch
[MVP]who gave me an initial respose. Please respond.

Allow an exception for your Norton program and see it that works.
I'm assuming you are using only one firewall...Windows Firewall.

Some programs 'seem' to stop working after you install Windows XP Service Pack 2
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;842242&Product=windowsxpsp2

Adding a program exception:

1. Use an Administrator account to log on.
2. Click Start, click Run, type: Wscui.cpl , and then click OK.
3. In the Windows Security Center window, click Windows Firewall.
4. On the Exceptions tab, click Add Program.
5. In the list of programs, click the name of the program you want to add,
and then click OK. If the name of your program is not in the list of programs,
click Browse to locate the program, and then click OK.

Carey-
First, I use ZoneAlarm firewall. I have tried your instructions with Windows
firewall only, with ZoneAlarm firewall only and with both activated.
Norton AV is not in the list of exceptions. I click "Add a program" then
"browse", then All Programs and go to Norton Antivirus. Under Norton
Antivirus there are many folders and files. I have no idea which one to
select. Where do I go from here?
Thanks

Carey-
I use ZoneAlarm firewall. I have tried your instructions with Windows
Firewall only and with ZoneAlarm firewall only and with both activated. I
have tried the Norton WMI download with each of these firewalls as above and
I've tried with no firewall active at all to no avail.
I've tried your instructions but something appears to be missing. Norton is
not listed under exceptions. Under "Add programs" Norton is not listed. I
browse to get Programs/ Norton Antivirus. When I open Norton there are a
number of folders and files and I have no idea where to go from there. Can
you help further?

"Live Update - Norton AntiVirus" should be shown in the exceptions list.

I now have LiveUpdate in the exceptions list. WMI and my virus definitions
still download and my virus definitions are up to date. BUT, even though WMI
downloads it will still not install. (errors 1812 and 1806). As I previously
mentioned, I have uninstalled and reinstalled LiveUpdate several times with
no correction to the problem.

I have the exact problem and have tried the exact same solutions as you have
mentioned. I also have reinstalled Norton several times as well and have
deleted the files in the download folder as well. Help.

1812 and 1806 are LU (LiveUpdate) errors. The fix is on the Symantec
support site. Do a search for LU1812 or LU1806 errors.

If you get some help, please post it. I'm still waiting for responses from
Carey Fritsch on some of the specifics I posed to him in my 10/24 response to
him, re Norton AV2005 solving the problem. Symantec just offers the same
generic non workable procedures. Microsoft help is useless. They don't even
have the common courtesy to respond to my emails. We both need some help to
solve the common problem. Good Luck!

Have you upgraded to Norton AV 2005 yet? Does it help? I got the same
generic responses from Norton as well. I have the Windows Firewall disabled
and am only using the Norton Firewall. Even when I enabled Windows Firewall,
I got the same problems, WMI will not update.

I have read both of those sites and have followed the instructions and
deleted files as well as reinstalled LiveUpdate and Norton 2004. The WMI
updates still will not install.

I have not loaded Norton 2005 and because of all the Noton problems and
seeming indifference to their customers, I may go elsewhere. I have tried
with Windows firewall enabled only, with Autozone firewall enabled only,
with both enabled and with both disabled. It makes no difference. I asked the
same question re AV 2005 early in my posting but could not get a response.
Are you getting to this site (Microsoft Community Newsgroup) for postings or
thru another "Newsreader"? Nothing seems to work right in getting access to
this Microsoft hosted site and I have no idea how to post thru other sites.
Did you have a problem uninstalling Norton?

Deborah-
I finally bit the bullet and got rid of EVERTHING Norton. I then did a new
install of 2004. It was of course way out of date. The LiveUpdate, in three
tries took 12MB to download. BUT, it did download and installed Norton WMI!
I have had to disable outgoing email scan (info from Norton) because it was
causing CCAPP.EXE to max out my CPU memory. I still have some problems but
not as bad as before. Norton has been a pain in the butt. Don't know whether
I'll stay with it or not.
