norton, windows xp

I was ghosting my system from norton system works and
when it shut down it could not start again as it was in a
virtual partition...i have followed what norton have said
with regards to deleting the virtual partition and making
the windows partition active...but what is happneing now
i have a loop...windows splash screen then choose safe
mode etc...i make my choice and it then shuts down and
starts up...and around and around
i have used norton emergnecy disks and the diskit program
says that the startup.exe and the command.com are corrupt
or missing...what can i do...i do not have a recent back
up and its a laptop so i cannot take the hard drive out
and ghost it on to another computer and reinstall windows
etc....

I've had the same problem, first of all boot up in safe
mode and totally uninstall norton, reboot all should be
well. you can get a free anti virus from
grisoft.com...AVG6 free edition
