Norton System Work - Ghost 2003

I was trying to create a backup image of my main HD using ghost 2003 when the
program decided not to work properly. Disaster was my first thought. I
resolved it by removing the extra partition it created after booting up with
Symantics NSW CD. So great, my system is back to normal???? (My computer is
less then a year old (top of line at the time) and I have Windows XP Media
2005 Edition. ) After a couple of hours of work, I decided to open Live TV.
Nothing happened. Checking around to see what else has happened, I realised
that COM+ was not operating and of course this naturally has a domino effect
on a number of other features. Thank God for the NT/XP engine to at least
not crash the entire system down. I wasn't sure at first if the removal of
Ghost had anything to do with this or something else since I was cleaning out
the HD of other unwanted features.

My solution to the problem was to use the System Restore, picked a point
that made sense and sure enough the system was retored to its old self. Live
TV was back. The next day, I noticed that NSW was still on my computer, so
I uninstalled it again and sure enough the problem returned and was fixed
once more with System Restore.

Okay, my question, does anyone have a solution or suggestion on how to
finally get rid of NSW? It is taking resources I don't want it to have.

regards,

Hello jsek!

While I was reading your post , the first thing I thought about was "System
Restore will save this person" and it was right and you did it.Great!

Before that above you say that Norton SW was again there but you don't
mention you removed it before. Can you describe with more details the exact
problem that appears as soon as you remove Norton SW.I am asking that because
you say only this which ,unfortunately , doesn't desctibe the problem , I
think.
...when the
program decided not to work properly. Disaster was my first thought. I

Symantics NSW CD. So great, my system is back to normal...

Symantec have made special utility called SymNRT.exe which is able to
remove all Norton 2003/2004/2005 and 2006 products as well as Norton Ghost
2003.
Use it to remove Norton's products:

Well , but there is something after that:
you are without antivirus software !?!?!
You say you don't like Norton so you can buy better product , I think.

Panda Titanium 2006 Antivirus+Antispyware

or

Kaspersky Antivirus Personal

Test with trial version before you buy and buy only from their legal
web-sites or legal local resellers.

Hello Panda_man,

thank you for the response.

Yes, I had uninstalled Norton SW 2003 and following the reboot, COM+ failed
which effects a number of other programs including Live TV from the Media
Centre.

System Restore fixed this, but I notice that Norton SW was still in the list
of available programs, so I once again uninstalled NSW and once again COM+
failed. This obviously confirmed that Norton SW was the problem. It must
have deleted or left a switch open/closed in one of the Microsoft components,
regardless System Restore once again came to my rescue.

With regards to virus protection, I have been using the freeware version of
AVG Ant-Virus for many years now and very pleased with it still. So I have
never been without.

The only feature of NSW that interested me was Ghost which was the only
alternative I had since I could no longer find Power Quest's Partition Magic
and Drive Image which I needed to retrieve some old stored files.. (I know
Symantic's bought them out).

Since I wrote my original letter, I tried modifying NSW through Control
Panel instead and turned off everything. Rather then a complete uninstall,
this little trick did the trick and did not damage XP. But this also
confirms that Norton's uninstall that comes with NSW 2003 is faulty in the XP
environment (I have SP2 and keep current with all patches and upgrades).
Task manager now confirms that NSW is not taking any resources, but the
program is still there and in the registry. I still will need to use Ghost,
but I am quite concern that this version is not completely compatable with
Windows XP. With some reluctance I will have to check into the latest
version.

It didn't even occur to me to check Symantic for a solution, so thank you
very much for the link, which I will have to try. Sounds odd with the
Norton's comments of "To use the Norton uninstall tool, download and run
three files, then reinstall your Norton products."

Once again thanks,

This is an update on the Norton fixes. Didn't work. Instructions where very
good, no quess work, but the results is the same, COM+ fails to work which in
Media Centre represents a disaster. I didn't bother to re-install
NSW...didn't see the point since the idea was to get rid of it period.

So once again System Restore, save the day. I will have to look into this
further, but any comments anyone care to make will be appreciated.

Well ... I think you can now try to install Norton SW again (I mean you do a
repair install of it) and then try to uninstall it because something might be
corrupted in the installation because you have done System Restore various
times.

What happens is :
you do System Restore , it fixes the problem about COM+ and so on but Norton
is back and not all files are there because System Restore doesn't restore
all files.

So do a System Restore , install Norton again "into" the old
installation. Then reboot and try to uninstall it again.

When you uninstall it again ... perform the tools offerd in Symantec's site
to clear it fully.

As you have spent many hours working on Norton and what it made to you , you
can back up your important information ,check it for malware and then format
the HardDrive and reinstall WIndows. It will take you at about 6 hours to do
all the job which includes reinstalling Windows , most applications and so on.

Here is basically what you should know if you reinstall Windows :
<The electricity is the onliest threat that might harm a
Windows installation >

How to reinstall Windows.Take your Windows CD/Recovery CD that you received
when you bought Windows/your computer and Start->Turn off->Restart.

Immediately insert the CD and next time you will manually or automatically
boot from the CD and carefully perform the instructions to install
Windows. When you get to the state where it check if you have previously
installed Operating Systems it will see that you have Windows XP.Now follow
the instructions to delete the partition and then Windows will ask you to
format (FULL FORMAT , NOT QUICK !!!)
You agree to format and the process is starting. The format will take
you at about 15 minutes and all of your files are gone. Then the install
process will continue just follow the instructions and enter your Windows
code from the COA (sticker which you received with your Windows/Recovery CD).
This is important as it is the licence for your Windows.

When the install process of Windows XP is ready , install the drivers for
your PC.
Install legal drivers . All hardware comes with drivers on CD.

Now , make sure you have firewall ON. Windows XP Sp1 and Sp2 have firewalls
and it depends on when you bought your Windows. To make sure which version you
have , goto Start - Run and now type:
winver

You will see which is your Service Pack .

If it is Sp1 ,enable ICF (internet connection firewall) for all connections :
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/learnmore/icf.mspx

If it is Sp2 ,Windows Firewall is already enabled .

Now , as you are home user , goto your network connections in Control Panel
and rigth click on each of them->Properties and make sure "File and Printer
Sharing" is UNCHECKED.
Right click on My Computer ->Properties->"Remote" tab and UNCHECK Remote
Assistante and Remote Desktop(Desktop only in XP Pro) .Apply and OK

Temporary turn off Automatic Updates in Control Panel->Automatic Updates.

You are really to connect to internet and continue working !!! :)

if you do not want to reisntall Windows, you can contact Symantec for
further assistance about Norton but I believe you really should uninstall it.

I will have to look and consider what you have said. It has been something
that I had been considering. Just didn't want to spend the time on a full
windows re-install. Of consideration, will be as to how much of a problem
does NSW represent to me now. Actually, as long as I don't use it and keep
everything turned off, it is fine. However, when I am ready or need to
access the benefits/features of Ghost (Ghost Explorer works fine so at least
I can access saved files), well that will be a different story. Ghost 2003
and NSW 2003 is no longer being serviced by Symantic (outside of their 2 year
rule), so I may have to purchase their latest version. Before then, I will
chat with them as you suggest.

Thanks again for your comments, and for this forum for allowing such
interaction.

Hello jsek! :)

You say you keep NSW off but it is still installed.

As you still have it , its reg keys remains and most if its files are still
there.

You can install antivirus programs like AVG free but if you try to install
another AV software you will not be able. Most (almost all) new programs check
if there is another antivirus before installing and therefore you will not be
able to perform such an actions !

I think you can start it again , from a clear state because it takes me no
more than 6 hours to format , reinstall , update, install applications again ,
check all settings and so on...
Ok...you decide.Have a nice day and do not hesitate to contact the Community
again !
