Norton live update, not really live

Did I set it up wrongly?
In options, enable live updates is ticked as well as Notify me when updates
are available.
All the other options are ticked as Automatically update my protection.
But updates don't come automatically in my computer and I am never notified.
And there are updates because when I click on Live updates there are updates
to download.
On my other laptop, Trend Micro automatically sends me updates, several
times a day.

Prolly not. 'Live Update' apparently means if you click it, the update
will download and install and you don't have to 1) download and then
2)install it - except if you use the 'Intelligent Updater'. Yeah, I
know, it's not exactly the automatic self-downloading and installing we
expect and get from other proggies. But that's Symantec. ;-)

Assuming you have XP, there are sometimes problems with the logon name
and password when Norton is setup. go to www.symantec.com and search
for liveupdate issues. Sometimes, just disabling liveupdate and then
re-enabling it, resolves it, but there are multiple different
solutions at the website.

Secondly, while LiveUpdate is supposed to automatically download virus
definition updates, quite often software/program updates are NOT
automatically downloaded and installed. Hence, every few weeks you
should run LiveUpdate anyway to check for program updates.

After installing Norton Internet Security there is usually around 40mb of
updates to the suite the first time you go on-line.

I'm wondering how anyone with a 56K Modem, doesn't pull there hair out,
after the 2nd machine reboot, when there is still another 20mb.

Then it's true. You must be a ****ing retard. as My Live update has been
working that way since i first started using Norton in 2001. It's still
working that way with nav 2005.

Yes, I have XP but I had no problem at all with logon name or password.
I don't think that running the live update every few weeks is safe. I
presently run it every morning but still don't feel safe, as in my other
computer, the updates come, as I said, several times per day.

I was lucky. Norton came pre-installed and almost up to date.

The sig updates come automatically (when it works). The program updates you
want to do manually, at your convenience, because you'll have to restart the
computer after.

If ther'e a problem with LU, the standard Symantec diagnostic / reparative
procedure is to un install and re install. I did THAT a couple times:
Run un in stall wizard. Restart system.
Run un install cleanup (download special cleanup from Symantec). Restart
system.
Install NAV V200x. Restart system.
Run LU to update programs. Restart system.
Enable LU automatic updates.

The last time, I half did it:
Run un in stall wizard. Restart system.
Run un install cleanup (download special cleanup from Symantec). Restart
system.

And went with another AV. Problem solved - for good.

Have you run the Symantec "automated support assistant"?

http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/consumer.html

It will often diagnose problems and fix liveupdate and other problems.

Thanks for the tip. I think that, after this trial, I won't register with
Symantec and will go directly back to Trend Micro.

No, I have not but it seems that my product works well, according to its
specs. It just does not work as I would like it to work. This is
different.

Maybe - there's (at least) two 'Bud' posters, but I'm wondering why you,
c*ASS*per the *friendly*..(LOL!), didn't give "ah" the proper settings?

Well bully for you. And you get automatic downloads of program updates
and the daily 'Intelligent Updater'?

As Penn and Teller would say, "Bullshit!" :-)

Uh the intelligent updater is a different thing than Live update. You
don't even NEED it.

Whatever. Enjoy your inferior AV program.

So you will forgo all new antivirus definitions until the next 'Live
Update' on the 25th?

....
Whatever. Enjoy your inferior AV program.

Heh, I wonder whose is inferior. ;-)
