O.K. Adware. The name of the adware is, Adware.mainsearch. It's taken
over about.blank as a Windows Explorer option, you set Explorer to about.
blank and it has this bogus generic search window. Norton finds it, identifies
it, but won't zap it. The instructions for removal are to go to Windows
Explorer
and delete it, but - access denied. The name of the file is lbh.dll. Would I
have to go into the registry to delete it? Just wondering if someone could
tell me how, thanks very much.

Start up in Safe Mode.

Boot up into Safe mode. You should then be able to delete the file.

Windows Explorer? (probably you meant "Internet Explorer")

I believe that they mention starting the computer in "Safe Mode".

....and for a reason.
but - access denied.

....and *that* may be the reason. ;o)

You don't delete files from the registry, you only delete references
to files from there.

There are several ways, but I don't know what OS you are using.

Maybe you could try the procedure from Norton again, this time
*really* doing what they suggest.

It's Windows XP Pro.

I tried it in Safe Mode and it wouldn't
delete, also I ran the update as they
suggested before rebooting.

Have you tried XP's "Recovery Console"? I think it allows you
to delete files. In case you didn't install it as a boot option, it
should be on your installation media (CD).
