Norton Ghost 2003

I have Norton Internet Security 2004 installed on my computer, running on
the XP-home OS. I have not loaded other software that was bundled with the
computer "Norton Ghost 2003" as I am not sure what it's for? Can someone
please tell me what Ghost 2003 is for and is it any good?

Ghost is mainly for creating an image file (ghost file) of a disk.This can
be done for security purpose, or foe duplicating a disk on another or on
multiple computers.

For sheer laziness, you take the cake!

Why didn't you think to look at the handbooks, the readme files, do a
Google search, look at the Symantec site, anything before wasting
other peoples' time when it's so easy to find it out yourself!

And just in case you can't do any of those things, it's an imaging/
backup program that can take an image of you HDD or partitions and
save it to local HDD/network drive/CD/DVD and restore either complete
or by individual files.
 
It's not laziness Peter. I've downloaded things in the past and due to my
lack of computer skills I have repeatedly had to get outside help to fix
some of the problems this has caused. The advice that I was given was, ask
people for their opinion that are using the program first before you
download it. I thought that made good sense?

OK Scotty, no worries, but you will never learn if you rely on others
to do your thinking for you. And according to your first email, you
didn't have to download Ghost - it was bundled with your computer, so
a quick browse of the documentation or read-me files before posting
should have answered your questions, and you could feel good about it
too! Then you could post and ask questions like "Is Ghost 2003/9 as
good/reliable/convenient as Acronis True Image 8?"
That sort of question should provoke some lively discussion!

Its a program that allows you to back up your whole harddrive,either
to another drive, CDR or DVD.

Then if windows ever goes down, you just boot up ghost and restore
your image.

I perfer Acronis True Image - love the backup / restore to a network
drive in DOS and you can setup to backup your harddrive every X day
at say 2am. In the morning there is no trace of the program doing a
backup just an extra backup file on your hd.

You say Norton Ghost will back up your hard drive to CD, if say the data on
your Hard Drive is 4 GB will Norton Ghost back up this to six (x6) 700MB
CDs? Thanks - Steve B.

Yes, it'll just ask you for another blank cd when it full and
continue.

Yes, but it compresses the data (how much depending on the
files, for example text compresses great but a ZIP or JPG is
already compressed, and/or if you manually specify different
compression type insteae of accepting default compression
(which most people do)) so the resulting image size may be
closer to 50% of original file(s) size, give or take.

So using Norton Ghost we now have a number of CDs with an image of our
original data. How, if needed, do we load these onto say a new hard drive,
do we need to load the Norton Ghost program first somehow? Thanks - Steve B.

DOS boot disk with ghost on it.
For Ghost or Driveimage I usually put the app on the CD and
make it bootable.
