Norton, Frontpage, and pictures

I'm having a problem on several of the websites I've made. This problem is
that some people who are using Norton (I'm not sure which component is
causing this) are unable to see all or some of the images on the pages. The
websites are primarily graphics, so people have sent me complaints that all
they see is a pretty much blank page. I was clued into this when someone who
did not have Norton had been viewing one of my sites on a regular basis, then
after installing Norton asked if my website was down. I have since ran some
tests on it... specifically installed Norton - couldn't see anything - then
uninstalled it - saw the pictures again. And no, there aren't little boxes
with "x"s in them... the pictures simply do not download at all... no
placeholders or anything. I'm using Frontpage 2002. Are there updates I'm
missing? Would upgrading to 2003 fix the problem? I'd rather not upgrade
yet unless I know it will fix this problem. Here are several of the sites
that don't work:
http://www.btaylorphoto.com/
http://blutmodels.com/
http://www.hopewausau.org/
http://www.judilondon.com/
http://chocolatcascades.com/

This is not FP related or site related for that matter, this is Norton security configuration issue
that each user must adjust to allow JPG images. I don't use Norton, so I can not tell you what
configuration settings need to be changed, etc.

If you feel your current issue is a results of installing
a Service Pack or security update, please contact

If the problem can be shown to have been caused by a
security update, then there is usually no charge for the call.

If it is not a FP issue, why does this not occur on other websites? These
same people can view other sites' images, but not the ones I created with FP.
Considering how many people use Norton, I would have to say that I would
rather fix something on my end than have people glance at a page without
pictures then move on to someone else's website.

I'm not using Norton, and I can see images on those sites.

You do have some files with uppercase and spaces (%20) which will cause problems if you are on linux/unix servers (I didn't check if you are though)

See Kathleen reply about folder names.

I remember I had a problem with my firewall blocking an image because I had
the file name of an image with the word "ad" in it - which of course
ZoneAlarm took to be an advertisement, and accordingly blocked it. Once I
changed the name, it displayed as normal - and no, it wasn't actually an
advertisement!

So, same thing here "Banner" might be a word that Norton has taken to mean
"advertisement banner" or something, and is blocking it. Some firewalls
block images of certain sizes (e.g. the size of typical advert
banners/images). So if the user tries to turn off "block ads" they might
find it works.

Regarding the fact they can view other sites suggests this is the reason -
as those other sites don't have anything to make Norton block the content
from being displayed. Maybe it works too well, you get a product to block
certain things like popups or advertisements, and it works too efficiently
and inadvertantly blocks legitimat content as well.

Humph...

I never use spaces in files but have encountered a few issues along these
lines...

(I stopped using Norton Internet Security a year ago and went to McAfee and
things have been better ever since for viewing websites)

About FP issues though, I created this site for my poet friend in FP (using
shared borders awhile back) and his Norton blocks the animated .GIF at the
top right of the screen.

http://www.toddswift.com/

I recently visited another friend of mine who owns a MAC with Norton that
would not show "DWT" headers that I had created on certain sites. Though,
on some others, it shows. On one site, I looked into the IE view source
on his MAC and it had removed an image and even commented in the code it had
done so! Really weird.

hehe

There is nothing w/ the animated gif that would cause if to be blocked
- but any animated gif won't work if the user browser settings are not set to play animations

I've just noticed that some of those other banners that didn't show up on my
friend's Mac with Norton used "banner" somewhere in the image name... i.e.
vg_banner.jpg. or banner_bg.jpg I've now changed the file names from any
such sites.

Thanks for the info about the animated gif. I wish I could check his
computer myself but he's moved to London England with his wife so it's a bit
far for a hop, skip, and jump! hehe

This is a great group to learn stuff!
