Norton AV 7.6 problem

I have tried to find a solution to this on NAV site with no luck whatsoever.
A week ago the NAV server appeared with a red x and no clients showed up in
the admin panel--there is a grayed out option to "Make the server a primary
server". After checking services, running a local scan on the server, I
decided to uninstall and reinstall, which worked fine for a couple of days,
then the same thing happened.

On a related note, one of the client machines fails to load realime
protection. I also reinstalled the client on this machine with no luck. I
am suspecting that a virus/worm affecting that machine is working its way to
the server and disabling it beyond repair. Does that seem like a logical
explanation? Has anyone else seen anything like this before?

Any comments appreciated,

Thanks,

Wanda

Hi Wanda,

I had something similar but not as complex as yours. My AV disabled
itself after a few days running fine and defied all attempts to
re-enable it including re-installing NAV. Very deep digging in the
knowlege base revealed that NAV has problems with my soundcard (creative
audigy zx series hardly a rare beast). Help listed several fixes which
were either irrelevant or no good on my system.

Your problem with the client machine looks like it comes from the same
sort of "NAV issue" as mine did, the symptoms look very similar. Do a
bit of serious digging, I would be interested if you find a similar cause.

My Norton AV went in the bin months ago.

that's quite a story--what did you replace NAV with?

Thanks,

Wanda

snip
I got F-Protect AV and I am still using Norton Personal Firewall 2003.
I am behind a router / NAT / Hardware firewall so I reckon Norton 2003
is good enough as it is not "front line"

A lot of people say NOD32 is best but I reckon F Protect has better
trojan protection than NOD at the moment + its much easier to use
interface wise when I am on the phone to the computer challenged with
a problem. And I get to put it in 5 computers on one subscription
legally 8-)

I am also using MS Antispyware Beta which is IMO surprisingly very
good mostly because it alerts on any application activity which is
very useful.
