This isn't specifically an XP problem, but I can't seem to find info
anywhere else. I've been having virus like activity on my computer but when
I run Norton (I have Norton AntiVirus 2002 with current definition
subscription), everything seems to be clear. I decided to check my options
to see what was listed there, but there's no options tab anymore. All I
have is the Live Update icon and the Help icon and nothing else. What I'm
experience is a occasional shut downs and restarts for no apparent reason.
I have strange unknown files replicating on occasion. I keep Windows Update
on auto and have all the latest patches installed (as far as I know.) Has
anyone else experienced this problem, or if this isn't the newsgroup for
this issue, does anyone else know where to go?

Not sure if this will help but you are correct in that it sounds like a
Virus. I spoke with a help desk recently and they asked me to check in the
Task Manager for unknown running processes starting with B,T or M I think.
It sounds like the BLASTER so a System restore back to system default is the
only option IF IT IS! There might also be an EXE program in the Windows or
System/32 directory balled BLAST or BLASTER.exe.

Dean

Is there a way to find out what processes they might be? I have a lot of
processes running and I'm not sure which ones are shady and which ones are
legit, several begin with at least m.

download lavasoft's AdAware, run it to scan for nasties.

www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware

you might also try SpyBot Search and Destroy, it's more comprehensive, but
AdAware is more novice friendly. With either, always do a "search for
updates" before doing your first scan, so you have the latest reference
file; they're updated regularly, the app itself is not.

both these programs scan your system for "spyware" that might be lurking
on your system. Norton doesn't look for these (NAV 2004 does now;
AdAware is still better).

this site:

and others like it, can help you identify what programs are running in the
Task Manager list, and how they got there. do a google on task manager
list for other places that can help.

what I usually do first if I see something in the task manager list that I
don't recognise, is open a search window (windowkey-F) and search for a
file with the name of that task. it'll usually find an .exe or .dll with
that name on the system somewhere. the folder it's in can tell you a lot,
and if you hover your cursor over the entry the pop-up properties_summary
info can also give a hint about what it is (vendor, version, etc);
right-click it and choose properties for the full list of properties. If
that's not enough just google the name, it'll turn up, especially if it's
a known nastie.

good luck
