I just installed Norton AntiVirus on my home machine,
(which is running Windows 2000) -- it is giving me a
message that a file called "kkvtlin.exe" which is in the
WINNT/SYSTEM32 subdirectory is infected, and can't be
repaired.

Does anyone know what this file is -- and if I need to
replace it -- or can I just delete it?

Thanks for your help!

Hi Sara,

What virus was detected in the indicated file? The file name suggests that
it is randomly generated, probably by the worm.

This also means that it is entirely malicious, and just deleting it if that
option is given would be the best idea. If you get an "access denied" error
when deleting it, try booting into safe mode (while starting your computer,
press DEL or F8 - it depends on the manufacturer of your computer) and then
running the scan from there.

Hope this helps!

The FIRST thing you need is anti-virus, and
make sure it is configured to download the latest updates at least once a
week. www.grisoft.com is free anti-virus, use it. [Note that once you are
infected, your anti-virus may not be able to remove some viruses, in which
case you have to download and run the www.mcafee.com "Stinger" tool or
search the virus encyclopedia on the web site of your anti-virus
manufacturer for the exact name of the virus found on your computer, in
order to download a special one-time virus removal tool.]

If you aren't running XP, you need to get your own firewall. www.kerio.com,
www.sygate.com and www.zonealarm.com are all free firewalls. Get one.
