Also some virusses actually disable antivirus software
when they get the chance so maybe you are even obliged to
re-install your virus- and firewall software.

Happened to me.

I've been using Norton AntiVirus for just under 9 years. No virus - or
anything else - has ever disabled it.

Something to note. If a virus affects certain values in your windows
registry, it can cause auto startup items to never enable. See, they do not
START enabled. They enable in the process of the startup. If a parameter
that they need to activate is not initiated they may never start. I have
run into this problem before with many programs including Auto Startup AVs.
My fix was to delete the directory for the AV program and then reinstall it
fresh, then immediately run all updates after restarting the computer. You
may get .vxd not found errors at this restart. Those missing or miss
identified files may have been what were causing the autostart options not
not work correctly. those .vxd files can be found by browsing the cabs on
your windows installation disk. When you find them, right click on them and
extract them to your (drive):\windows\system folder for windows
95,98,98se,me based systems and to the (drive):\windows\system32 folder for
NT, 2000 and XP based systems.
Hope that helps.
