I just had my motherboard and processor upgraded. The
computer shop that did the work reinstalled Windows XP.
My Norton Antivirus program and several other programs
(Roxio 5, DVD player, etc) no are not working properly
i.e. Windows does not think they are installed.

I tried uninstalling Norton using the uninstall portion of
Norton under programs. I get an error message saying that
the action is valid only for currently installed programs.

If I go to Windows Add/Remove then Norton is not listed.

If I try reinstalling Norton I get an error message
saying there is a later version of Norton present and the
installation fails.

How can I get these programs up and going?

The only thing you can do is take your norton antivirus cd-
rom (along with the other programs) and reinstall them.

When I first bought my computer there was a problem that
required me to uninstall programs including Norton System
Works. When I tried to re-install Norton I got the same
error message as you are. I even ran the Norton removal
tool on Symantec's site without success. What I
eventually had to do after several days of messing around
was reformat my HDD then do a clean install of
everything. Worked good after the format.

Just thought I would let you know what I had to go
through with a similar problem.
