having a lot of trouble installing on win xp home system. Essentially it
installs but then the configuration manager does not work and stays on the
first screen. Have followed many of the suggestions on Symantec website
including several uninstalls and reinstalls. I have no viruses - as checked
with another software. The update manager works ok - when installed
separately

Anyone else with this issue and can advise what todo

It's a pile of crap. Uninstall it, clean up the mess and install something
reliable like F-Prot or others recommended here.

I've had a similar problem when trying to install NAV 2005 to see what it
was like. I tried all sorts of things including following various Symantec
support articles. Suffice to say it didn't fare well in my anti-virus
testing day.

I gave up. If you've purchased it you might be better off getting a refund.
I'm seriously considering installing NOD32 when my current NAV subscription
runs out, as once again Symantec are (will be) *days* late releasing
definitions for a virus I got in an email, where NOD32 detected it
heuristically, and I believe, by definition. Their software seems to get
bigger, slower (even on high-end machines) and buggier with every single
release.

Sorry I can't offer more constructive advice. (I suppose in a way I have!)

Cheers

i have used AVG successfully but might try out mcafee, not sure yet. I am
amazed since the installs have gone well on another computer - using a
second copy I purchased.

About the only 'helpful' info you usually get in this ng concerning Norton is
to uninstall it and use something else. It's a very well informed group and also
a very biased group, overall. (most bias through hearsay or a bad experience
within the last 5 yrs) :-)
Go to the Symantec site and possibly find answers there.
One of the biggest problems with a very invasive program install is that
UNNECESSARY programs are running during its install and during its uninstall.
Hopefully another member will be able to help you out.

Uninstall, look on side of box, read money back guarantee, phone customer
support and get your money back.
You now have two options, go for the perfectly fine avg free anti virus, or
if you insist on paying, get NOD32.

Norton internet security is really a pile of poo.

Mcafee is much the same as norton, in that it is a big resource hog, but has
a nice pretty interface, which is slow, cumbersom and unreliable.

At the risk of sounding unoriginal, get your money back and buy
something else. I have had no problems (so far) since abandoning NAV and
switching to F-prot on one machine and NOD32 on three others.

Did you already try these KBs? If not, call the support line and ask
to have the issue escalated if they cannot provide an answer, if they
resist, push harder. That will get you to someone in the States who
can get your issue resolved. Good Luck

I tried those two out with a similar problem; I was gutted after I found
two articles that described the problem I had but neither fixed it!

Yes I have found those articles and went through those solutions about 30
minutes ago. They did not work -I get stuck on the first page of the
configuration setup that comes up automaticallyl. I had removed 3 viruses
using their online program and was thorough in following all steps,
including shutting all non essential startup programs.

I have now given up, and installed Mcaffee version 9 without a hitch. I am
disappointed in Norton, their lack of free phone support -even though I had
great success with it on my daughter's computer - which by the way has much
less software on it. Fortunately I got this version freee after rebates so
as long as I get the money back I am ok. If not, they will hear from me.
I use AVG on a third computer (mine) and am ok with it given I do little
downloading etc of files etc.

I do believe norton is better than AVG - at least in detection - some
viruses got through with AVG - but AVG is much less intrusive and have used
it for 4 years without problems.
