Norton Anti-virus

I think a number of readers of this ng use Norton, so it might be approprate
to ask this question here.
I observe in Task Scheduler that Norton checks for Automatic Updates "every
five minutes." This is the default, since I've never even looked at it
before.
Is that a bit excessive? The application is Symantec Net Detect. Does anyone
have a recommendation for how often this should be set to run?
Also, should it be set to wake the computer up if it happens to be in
standby? (If so, surely it should not be every five minutes!)
Thanks.

Virus files are released on the internet every second.
Would you rather chance those odds?

But Norton normally releases updates on Wednesdays. They do put out special
releases when needed, such with the current spate of new worms. They did an
out of cycle release Monday.

As to how often should your system check - every 5 minutes is a bit
ridiculous. I've set mine to check once an hour, and that is still probably
overkill.

Mine is set to every 4 hours (which I thought was the default, but I could
have changed it from 5 min., I honestly can't remember). As for standby, I
suppose that's up to you, how much time the system is down and how often you
schedule the program to check.

And yes, IMO, 5 min. is excessive.

It does appear that mine is also set to four hours (from the moment the
computer boots or is "awakened"), yet there is still the line in the top
drop-down box that says "Every five minutes 24 hours a day." It's confusing.
