When I open word and go to new, I would like to have the correct tabs, margains, etc. for my letterhead. It never stays, each time I open up file - new - the tabs and margains go back to the original ones, which means I have to set it up each letter - it's taking me forever. Can someone help. Thank you

If you already have other customizations stored in your normal.dot
template, then make a backup copy of it before doing the following.
If it's basically the same as when you opened the box, then you don't
need to make the backup (because Word can recreate it in its new,
unmodified state).

Open the document called normal.dot. It's probably in your user
template file, which might be in different places depending on your
operating system. Make the changes you want to have come up ALL the
time, then save the document AS normal.dot. Do not save it as
something else or in a different place. Now it should work the way
you want.

But do you really want that? If you will not use those settings ALL
the time, then leave normal.dot the way it is, and save your custom
settings in a new template, called, e.g., "ltrhd_1."

There should be no shortage of guides on the Web to modifying Word
templates.

Hi Charlot,

First, figure out where the template is. In Word, click Tools | Options |
File Locations and then select User Templates and click Modify. From there,
click the Look In box to see where your templates are stored, and then click
Cancel and Close to exit. Next, open the template from Word (click File,
Open, navigate to the location you just found, select the template, and
click Open). When the template opens, add whatever you want to the template,
then save it.

Suggestion: I wouldn't modify Normal.dot. I'd make a new template based on
Normal and use "Save As" to save it with a new template name. Then the next
time you click File | New, your new template will appear.

One unattributed thank-you would have sufficed. <g>
