Normal temperate for hard disk?

My PC refused to boot this evening. I got a "disk error" at boot. Happened
about 10 times until I turned off my PC and left it for a while. It then
booted OK.

So it sounds like a heating problem (the drive is an ATA133 7200rpm). How
hot should it be? It's currently reading 38C. Is that normal?

38C should be within spec, go to the manufacturer's website and download
the specs for the drive. My guess is that the drive should be able to
operate up to 50 or 55C.

If you haven't already backed up everything you need off of that drive do
it now. The drive is in the process of failing.

38C is within spec for any (normal, PC) drive.
A disk error message could be a problem other than with the drive.

When you receive that message, try powering off, unplugging system from AC
for ~3 minutes, then reconnect to AC and power on.

Check power supply voltages and CPU, system temps.

If you have valuable data that's not backed up, do so... valuable data
should be backed up regardless of pending situation. Then run the hard
drive manufacturer's diagnostics, available from their website if not
included with a retail packaged drive.

38°C is a little warm but not excessively so. You didn't mention what make
of HDD. I use Seagates and the model I use is speced up to 60°C max
continous use. I certainly wouldn't be happy getting close to that.
Currently it's running at 31°C. On really hot days I've had it up to 45°C.
(Before I changed my case lay-out to keep it cooler).

Agreed. But I don't like anything above 45 C (reported by SMART
rather than own temp probe).

Make sure your CPU fan is operating, I had a bad one and it drove me nuts
till I figured it out.
