I'm administering an XP machine that has had incomplete
virus protection. I know that's a problem and I'm working
on getting an up-to-date virus protection for it but I have
a basic question about applications that use the Internet.

Is there any acceptable reason why a program like the
Netscape browser would try to act as a server, i.e. try
to accept unsolicited connection attempts from
the Internet? Is this ever a legitimate request of such a
program?

Thanks,
Billy

I would be a little cautious of that myself-it sounds suspicious It might
be a good idea to look at the network traffic that is being sent using
Ethereal or Netmon and see what it is. An additional tool that can come in
handy to look at what an application is doing is Process Explorer, from
Sysinternals (http://www.sysinternals.com).

I just finished doing a complete scan with Norton Anti-Virus
and the system is clean. Now I'm really stumped. I expected
to find viruses. If my system has no viruses, why is Netscape
trying to be a server?

Is there any reason to run the tools suggested by Tim Springston
above if NAV says my system is clean?
