Another possibility is that there is a shortcut assigned to the ViewGridlines command, and that shortcut is being depressed by mistake. It would be worth investigating this in the Customize Keyboard dialog box.

I'm not sure how that box gets checked. My assumption had been that it was
checked by users meaning to turn on table gridlines (Table | Show Gridlines
in Word 2003 and earlier). That control is on the contextual Table Tools |
Layout tab in Word 2007/2010. Since the Table Tools tabs are displayed only
when the insertion point is in a table, and the Design tab is on top by
default, the View Gridlines button might not be discovered as easily there
as the one on the View tab.

My normal template has changed from a blank document to a graph type
page with small squares all over the page. I have deleted the
normal.dotm and it reappears as before. How do I get rid of this?
Suzanne thank you so much for solving this problem for me. I did not
know that tab existed. I am the only one who uses this computer. How
did I check it? Who knows? And, and at this point, who cares?
