Now that I thought I had solved my problems with Word2002 on XP I have
another one:

Whenever I close Word it tells me that changes have been made to the global
template normal.dot and asks me if i want to accept the changes. I say yes
and next time the sema happens.

Any ideas?

Some time ago I got a couple of websites from you (Graham I think) very good
on solving Word problems, but I'm afraid I seem to have lost one of them
which had info on how to delete some keys in the registry to start afresh
with Word.

The site is probably the one under my signature (or at least one of them).
It has links to other sites, including Graham's.

What Word is telling you is that changes have been made to your template,
even though you weren't conscious of doing that. The most likely culprit is
a poorly-written Add-In program. Do you have: EZ-Photo, Adobe Acrobat, MS
Works, Scansoft? Their Add-Ins have been known to do this.

I agree - two other obvious contenders are the NAV Office plug-in for
Microsoft Office and the Microsoft Works add-in - (there's a page on my web
site about that one)

My web site is linked from my sig.

Well..

I have a Toshiba laptop that came with an MS CD that includes MS Works Suite
2002 SetUp, MS Works6.0 and MS Word 2002. I have Adobe Acrobat 5.1 (how can
I live without it?)

What should I do?

Thanks

Jack

Ahhhhh....

Hello Graham

I think I found the "culprit": in your web page you suggest that under
Options/Save we check a number of baxes.
And one of those boxes says: Prompt to save normal template!!!

And it does.

Now, why should I need that, when I am not making any changes whatsoever to
the template.

In fact, if I open a document and close it straight away without even
looking at it, I still get the box asking me if I want to save the
normal.dot template.

qim

You check that box to notify you of any potential changes to normal.dot. You
don't want Word doing things behind your back. It could be saving malicious
code into your default template! This is not the reason for unexpected
prompts. They are usually caused by badly behaved add-ins as discussed
earlier in the thread. If no changes are made to normal.dot then there
should be no prompt, regardless of this options setting. Leave it checked!!!

Thanks Graham

In Word the only mention in Tools about add-ins is "Templates and Add-ins".

I got rid of it. I hope that's what you mean...
I also uninstalled the Works Suite Addin for Word.

Regards

Jack

At some point you'll want the "Templates and Add-Ins..." command on your
Tools menu. That shows you the .dot templates that are loaded as well as
which template is attached to your current document.

What did you get rid of? It was the Woks add-in that was the likely cause of
the problem.
Are you saying you deleted the tools menu entry?:(

I can put it back, but that's the only one that talked about Add-Ins. maybe
I did not understand Graham's instructions or rather the ones on his page.

qim

I uninstalled the Works Suite Addin for Word. through Add/delete programs in the Control Panel.

And according to the page you sent me

http://www.gmayor.com/multiple_mail_merge_entries.htm

select Tools > Customize. This pops up the following dialog box:

Select each entry in turn, and with the left mouse button depressed, drag them off the menu, leaving just one.

Now...which entries are you talking about? Seems I screwed up, ehh?

qim

Hello Graham

Ok, the penny has dropped.

I have put back the "templates and Add-ins in the Tools drop-down menu.

I understand now that what I was supposed to get rid of wre the mailmerge
entries. There were not any!

Many thsnks for your help.
