Normal.dot ... not that normal!

I am clueless as to how to disable the updating in
document1 each time I go into Word.

For instance, when you load up Word 97 the first thing you
see is the file "document1", then if you, say, select from
the menu the "show/hide" button then shut Word off, then
go back in again the "show/hide" has been saved in
document1!

I think basically what I need to know is how do I manage
to stop Word from saving an updated document1 each time I
access it. Is it possible to have it abandon any
formatting each time?

Please help (and yes I explained this soooo wrong) lol

Put your settings to ask you if you want to save the
changes to Normal that you are saving to that particular
document.

Click Tools>Options>Save and checkmark Prompt to Save
Normal Template.

But such changes in environment are not considered changes in Normal.dot and
will not trigger the prompt. It is "normal" for Word to save your display
settings on exit.

Thank you both for your replies! Is there no way of
disabling Word from saving the display on exit then? *sobs*

No. But - You could run a macro on opening Word that sets
everything to a default configuration.

Or just make sure you have the display set the way you like it when you
close Word.
