I ave just taken delivery of the above to replace my fantastic P1200U -
which was a good and faithful servant for many, many years. I love it, there
are just a couple of things which are beginning to really bug me (one
operational, the other probably just a quirk of Epson's crappy software).

The unit is connected to a Dell 8300 via 2.0 cable which, in turn, is
plugged into a Belkin 2.0 4-port powered hub, as the cable that came with it
is only 1.5m long and won't stretch to the box, which is 2m away. I'm
wondering if it doesn't much care for the hub and would rather be plugged in
directly to the system (which has six 2.0 ports on the mobo). If this is the
case, then I'd have to rearrange the office.

OK, on to the issues: -

1) It appears incapable of scanning in one go. It has a lovely quick
warm-up at the start (~10 seconds), and it previews lightning quick but,
halfway through the scan (and I'm not scanning at any fantastically high
res - 300dpi for print) it stops and has to take another 10-15 seconds
warming up again. I cannot believe this is normal behaviour for a £300
machine! If it is, then I want a refund! I have updated the driver, no
difference. I'm scanning directly into Paint Shop Pro 8 or Photoshop 7 - the
OS is XP Pro, if it matters. Is it unhappy being plugged into a hub? Would
plugging it in directly eliminate this? Could someone else with the same -
or a similar - unit, please confirm, or deny, this behaviour?

2) The second, which could just be a quirk of the TWAIN software, is just
an annoyance. With the old TWAIN I was able to resize each side of the
marquee independently (i.e. if I wanted to move the right side, I could move
the right side and the rest would stay put). With this, if I move the top,
the right side will also move. Is this how it is, or can I change this
somehow? Is there a setting I'm missing? I'm using the Pro mode.

Any assistance gratefully accepted. I don't want to have to return this,
too - I'm already getting a refund on my Canon i9100!

Thanks, folks

How much RAM do you have in that computer? 256 MB is the minimum to have if
doing scanning. Also check the amount of HD space is available on the
Windows drive. (Virtual Memory)

The very first thing to try is to plug the scanner directly into the 2.0
port on the Motherboard. Hubs have been known to cause problems.
You can get USB 2.0 cables up to 15 feet (4.5 Meters)

The second thing to try is, plug the scanner into the USB 1.1 port on the
computer. Slower but may tell you if the transfer is stopping because of a
memory problem.

I have found that my Minolta Dimage Scan Dual IV scanner has an issue with
one of the applications that I use all the time. Yet, it works perfect with
Irfanview 3.85.

Get the Plugin/Addons also.

Consider this. A 8.5 inch by 11 inch (A4) scan at 300 DPI in color generates
about 25.245 Megabytes of data.

Do you have the ICE feature enabled? If so, that is the second light source
warming up to do a second scan using IR light which ICE needs in order to do
its magic.

You are probably in thumbnail mode where it is trying to auto-crop. Change
to normal mode and it will let you crop as you wish. See the EpsonScan
section of my batch scanning tips page for more info. on how to work in this
mode:

Whoops! It would help if I told you the salient details, wouldn't it? 1GB
PC3500 - 2x250GB Windows installed on 50GB partition with 35GB free space.

I know - I'm going to shuffle things around a bit anyway.

My system doesn't have 1.1 ports - they are all 2.0. I do have an internal
1.1 hub though. I'll hook that up.

Already use it.

I know. I'm scanning 4"x6" colour photos - one at a time.
