I am resonabl;ey new to Networking ( last time i did networking was 10 years
ago with unix and I cant remember a thing) and so I need a little help with
a school network I have volunteered to look after( bad move).

The network comprises of all things a server a kingmax KH 316a hub a Netgear
RM356 Modem/router and a Cnet CNP430 print server.

problem. I think whoever set up the network has got it wrong( my
opinon). They have the server and all clients plugged into the hub as well
as the RM. To my way of thinking this is a not very secure method, but
please correct me If I am wrong which is most probable. Why I think it is
wrong is that I have set time limits on a group of uses but they never time
out.Plus I cannot firewall the Network to protect the kids.

Any assitance would be greatly appreciated. BTW I have Peter Nortons Book on
Win 2000 server which helps a little.

I forgot to mention (apart from my aploigises for terrible spelling) that
quiet frequently when trying to log on to the network I get a "Domain does
not exsist" message. Is this caused by the physical layout of the network or
something else. I am going to try to set up the DHCP to see if this solves
my probs.
TIA Michael

Disable DHCP on router and configure it on Windows server; configure DNS
server on Windows server and enable forwarders. Windows built-in help is
pretty much enough to do it. Netgear router performs as a firewall by
default.
Ensure there is a domain rather a workgroup, otherwise logon hours limit
won't work.

I would use a second nic for the router.
What OS on the clients? If there are W9x/ME/NT's, WINS must be installed on
the server. Everything on an ipconfig/all from the client should point to
the server-IP.

OKY DOkey will give that a try. The clients are using XP bar one which is
win98 due to camera conflicts as in the camera is not supported under XP and
we use it for security.

Thanks for that.I had already diabled DCHP on the router, but it didnt seem
to help. But I will try the DNS fix.
