We've run into an ongoing problem with the word "NONE" printing in an
outline format at the top of reports being run in Access 2000.

I vaguely remember "ghost" elements appearing at other times in Microsoft
products. . . but I can't make it go away this time. . . thanks for any
hints.

AFAIK, there are no ghosts in Access. :-)

You will be looking to find "NONE" in one of the following places:
- the Caption of a label;
- the ControlSource of a text box;
- one of your fields.

If it appears only at the top of the first page, the control is probably in
the Report Header section. If it's hard to find, you could give half the
controls red text, and see if it's red. Yes: turn a quarter of them blue;
No: make another quarter blue. By dealing with half the controls at a time,
you can fairly quickly pin down which one is the culprit.
