Hi:

We just installed Windows 2000 on a new server. Amazingly none of the
workstaion (windows 98 & 2000 Pro) can be part of the doamin. When
attempting to join On win 2000 Pro the message the message"network name not
found" pops up. As soon as I try to join the domain; dialogue box for name
and passowrd pops up. It accepts the name password of administrator and than
cannot find the server. I am able to ping the file server by name. I have
installed several win2k servers. This is avery unique problem for me. I
have tried every DNS combination and have read every article on Microsoft
web site. Should I demote it to Stand alone server and than promo it back to
domain controller.

Please advice.

Thank you

Jamal

How many nics in the server and how are they setup?
You should also have WINS installed on it, as W9x needs it.
What does a IPCONFIG /All from a client give? Does everything point to your
server-IP?

Hi:

I have two NIC's in the server. I have disabled one of them. Could that be
cause of the proble. Ahe main adapter is 10.0.0.1. What shoud I check in DNS
and where.

I thank you for your help.

Hi Jamal,

Make sure the clients and the server are on the same subnet. At a Command
Prompt on a 2000 client, can you ping the IP of the server? Are the clients
also configured with static IP addresses?

If your Windows 2000 Server running as a domain controller is running DNS
(it should be), make sure it points to its own IP address for DNS and make
sure the clients point to it for DNS as well.

Hope this helps,
