Long story short, i got Broadband, it didnt work, they
said unistall it and try again, i uninstalled the software
and modem useing the 'Add/Remove' menu.
all went well and it asked me to re-start my PC to
complete the uninstallation.
i did this and when it started up again all my files were
there but none of them worked. 'My computer' and 'My
Documents' were now just called 'Folder', the 'Programs'
menu on the start menu is empty.
the best way to describe what happened to all my files is
like when you try and open a Word document, for example,
and you dont have Word Installed on you computer, you
click on it and it says 'select a program to open with'
but there are none to choose. its not just exe. files, all
files look like this that arn't Folders.

is my computer completely broken? do i have to format? can
it be fixed with the install ation of one simple file i
accidenlty deleted? will re-installing XP make my files
work again or are they lost forever?

any help here would be greatly apriciated.
Cheers

Richard.

Do you have a restore point in System Restore that pre-dates this problem?
