Hi, to continue with my secure e-payments system, I need to store a file in
a: "non web enabled directory" I do not understand exactly what this is!

How do I set up a non web enabled directory in Frontpage? help please!

You don't.

You need to contact the author of your e-commerce application and then work with them and your web
host to configure the server.

Thankyou for the reply Thomas, I have spoken to the author - HSBC - the help
line is in India and with the language problem got no where. I set up an
https (shared) secure site but all files and directories are visable in
Frontpage on that so I guess they are web enabled? I wondered if the
-private file was a non enabled directory?

any other ideas would be welcome.

Then you will need to talk with your web host, because if the folders/files need to be outside of
the web space, only your web host can give you access to that unless you are self hosting which is
not recommended, unless you truly know how to manage and configure web servers to be secure, etc.

Thany you Thomas. My Isp tells me that the private folder is non web enabled
so I guess that is it.

Do not use the FP _private folder as it has special permissions assigned and controlled by FP.

Oh dear! - I have stored some files in that folder. What will happen? FP
stills seems to be working ok.

It will not have any impact on FP, however some page my end up prompting your site visitor for
login.

Thomas, having just read your coment about not being able to use the _private
file, I have just looked at FP help regarding this.

They say: Hide a page from Web browsers
If you do not want site visitors to see certain pages in a web, such as
external style sheets or pages to be included in other pages, you can hide
these pages by placing them in the hidden folder _private, a folder that is
in every web.

In Folders view, select the pages you want to hide, and then drag them to
the _private folder. FrontPage automatically updates any hyperlinks to and
from these pages to reflect their new location.
Tip You can create subfolders in _private to organize pages, because
subfolders in the _private folder are also inaccessible to Web browsers.

So it seems ok would you say?

The _private folder does not hide pages, if the permission are correct users would be prompted to
login to access any pages which is good, however if you include content on other page from a page in
the _private folder, the page may prompt all users to login to see the page that has content for the
_private folder.
