My XP system, with and without SP2, seemed to become
infected with something. The main symptoms were a
significant drop in performance and the upload and download
lights being permanently on with typically many millions of
bytes being uploaded and downloaded in (say) a 30 minute
session. Virus checkers and spyware checkers did not help.
I resorted to cleaning the disk with a low level formatter
and reloading XP. As soon as XP was loaded I reconnected
with the internet (via a broadband link) and the same
problem started all over again. Again, virus checkers and
spyware/adware checkers detected nothing. I have therefore
resorted to running Windows Me which works fine.

Anybody any idea what the problem is?

Well, it looks like you seem to have some sort of 'virus/ spyware'
downloading onto your system. You need to reboot your system with your
broadband link and do it with the 'boot menu' on startup. And, do not install
SP2. You seem to have someone hacking onto your system and they are just
putting ALL the viruses on your system. I would reccomend a GOOD Anti-virus
and GOOD Firewall on yuor system m. e.g Norton Internet Security and
Anti-virus?

Stephen. Thank you for that. I installed what I hope is a
good firewall (ZoneAlarm) before booting my broadband link.
Sure enough it trapped a process DLLMANGER.EXE trying to
access the web. I denied it access and my problems ceased
(at least for the time being!!). A Google search on
DLLMANGER took me to a Trend Micro site which identified my
problem as WORM_RBOT.RG It also tells me how to get rid of
it which I shall do when I reboot XP (I am composing this
on Me). I will submit another posting to report progress
on terminating the program.

Why should I not bother with SP2?

Again, my thanks.

Brian
