PC not starting up

Hi all,
This is my first post, I am new to this, I need help!
My pc wont start, at all. The fans start but thats about it. I dont get the usual beep at the start, or the BIOS screen. I have tried reseating all the components (as instructed)
If anyone can give me advice i would be greatful other wise its gonna have to be an call out, and that could be pricey!
The last thing i did was copying a cd to hard drive, it crashed half way through and never came back!!
Please help!
If you need anymore info then post what you need to know and i will reply.
Thanks in advance.

Xp Home
Gigabyte GA-7VT600-L
AMD XP2800
1gb Ram pc3200
ATI 9800 S.E

Hmmm, not easy ...

It could be anything, even a failing power supply.

Remove the power leads to both the hard drive and any optical drives, they are not needed to test that the PC will post.

Try resetting the BIOS ... your motherboard manual will point you in the right direction, and usually involves moving a jumper to one position and then back again. (but not while the system is on)

Discharge yourself from any static electricity by touching the house radiator then disconnect your PC from the mains and remove your graphics card, then replace it back in the same slot ... or try another known working graphics card. Do the same with the memory, remove it and put it back. Or try a known working replacement.

Don't mess with the CPU ... very unlikely that is a problem but don't rule it out.

Try the above one point at a time

Hope that helps ...

oops, just re-read your post ... I see you had already reseated everything.

Not looking too good. :(

Check all power leads to the motherboard are properly connected and have not come loose?

Hmm... I'd say either PSU or Mobo if any components... Any components you are able to swap out from other machines?

it has to be one of your components on your board because neither does your bios come up and there is no usual one beep.

reseat your components again, and like everyone else has mentioned check all of your connections throughly, inside and out!

I am going to point in the direction of your CPU and Memory!
My money is on these! Reseat them again.
good luck

No start beep usually equals:

Dead mobo
Dead CPU
Badly seated memory/grafix card
Corrupted Bios
Confused Bios
Motherboard shorting to case
Knackered PSU
Loose power connectors
Faulty optical/floppy drive causing a short

All suggested above, really, I just repeating.

First thing I'd do is disconnect all drives, opticals & floppy, reset CMOS (Bios) then see if the machine POSTS (you get that one beep).

If you do then get that one beep, investigate further.

But, as Mucks says, it could be one of a hundred things.

Thanks for all your help and advice guys, sounds like i got some work to do when i get home! Will try what you recommended, and let you know the score.

does it sound like your hard disks come on? If your mobo has onboard gfx card. remove your 9800se and connect to your moniter to onboard. may be a compatability problem with your gfx card. Do the fans stay on? does it sound like its running and working, just not showing you a picture?

Moco - if the system was working fine before hand, it's doubtful that its a compatibility problem...

Right people, A tech guy had a look at my pc last night and he says its the cpu! He swaped it with another one and it fired up first time. Gonna get a new one and fingers crossed, it will be fine. So psd99 looks like you were right! Just for the record, i was very close to giving it a good kicking!! Thanks again for all your info, i wasn't expecting all this help, maybe i'll be back with more qustions another time. Cheers guys!
