Non-functional Hyperlinks

For some time now I have been unable to click on a
hyperlink in an E-mail, or in a web site and have anything
happen other than to have a screen appear, which I would
say is a "see-through", in that you can see what was on the
original screen, but nothing happens other than that the
Microsoft "World" icon in the top right hand screen corner
revolves and the new screen sounds a tone if I click on it.
But, I can leave it that way all day and nothing changes.
However, if I close that window with the "X" box,
right-click on the mouse, copy the hyperlink as a shortcut,
I can then paste it into the URL bar, hit enter and wind up
where I want to be.

I was running Windows 98 on a Pentium 4 compatible and used
IE-6, under normal conditions, or so I thought, until I
started having these problems. For most browsing and
E-mail, I have switched to Mozilla under Windows, which
works fine, and in a real pinch I can use it under Red Hat
Linux 9, which I have on my other hard drive, but that has
its own inadequacies. So, I really would like to find out
how IE 6 can be "fixed", at least with regard to the
hyperlink problem.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, but please bear in
mind that I do not want to do Registry surgery.
