non boot

running xp professional and recently added new cable modem and my system
froze displaying message unkown device in taskbar! tried to reset and system
just hangs in scrolling bar stage displaying xp logo. tried in safe mode
etc but with the same effect. i have also somehow lost my win xp pro disk
would could complicate matters somewhat!

any help appreciated
 
Rubian, unfortunately I don't have an answer but a question. How do you start in safe mode in XP? I know in 2000 Pro you hit F8, however, this doesn't seem to apply in XP. Sorry for the question but any help you can provide would be appreciated. Thanks.

Boot the system, start tapping F8, at the menu select Safe Mode.
 
Yes, having lost the XP CD, you have also lost the tools that could help
resolve the issue. You need to rectify that problem first. No point in
putting it off, at some point you are going to need to reinstall, something
you may need to do here but at this point, you cannot even do a repair
install because you lack the CD.
