I recently got an old HP d300 computer. It's been working erratically
- about one or two BSOD's a day for a couple of weeks. I checked the
memory (31 passes of memtest86+) and changed the hard disk (it needed
it anyway), but still get crashes.

I've started noticing something in the case is making a whirring
noise, which I traced to the power supply fan. I'm sure it's gotten
louder very recently since I didn't notice it before. One perculiar
thing, I turned the box off for the night and when I tried to boot in
the morning it took about 10 tries. Each time the boot got a bit
further until it finally made it all the way.

Can anyone diagnose this problem???

All those fans can be lubricated, and all fans need lubrication after a
while. If you've never done it before, there are step by step illustrated
tutorials out there that can help you.
