I've got a very noisy 9600GT card, which seems a plain NVIDIA one. I've
read somewhere that the card is known to be noisy (fan going full blow),
until the NVidia driver is installed (which reduces fan usage under
light processor weight). But I've installed the driver and the noise
remains the same. Did I overlook a setting somewhere in the driver, or
is it back to the shop for a Zalman VGA cooler(*)?

(*) which may be an option anyway since that PC will also run Linux at
times...

It's possible the (anonymous) maker of this card tried to save some money,
and mounted a non-regulated fan.

Quite a while ago, I bought an XFX GeForce 8800GT 'Alpha Dog Edition'
which also had such a penny-saving 'feature'. One thing is for sure; I'll
never buy an XFX card again, and I will certainly make 100% sure a
videocard has a regulated fan, before I buy another one...

If you can, check the wires going to the fan; if it has 2 wires, it's a
non-regulated one for sure.

Regards, Patrick.

A regulated fan has 4 wires (the 3-wire fans are those whith a feedback
on fan speed) and indeed the orginal fan was a 4-wire version.
