I replaced my front case fan with a Panaflo FB08A12L and think that was
noisier than what was there to begin with. It makes kind of a muffled,
revolutionary, banging noise. Is the only way I can explain it. Both fans
are bit loud even when not attacked to the case so I don't think it is the
case. They both kind of shutter. Any other suggestions?

Shutter would tend to be imbalance. Usually Panaflos are pretty
well balanced and relatively quiet but perhaps you have a bad
specimen there.

I don't know what it is. Do you know anything about Arctic fans? I thought
about giving this one a shot. I wish there was a place near by to buy these
rather than having to order by mail. Oh well.

It looks like the typical fancy, medium quality fan... Panaflos
are high-end, better fans, it was likely just a fluke that the
one you have is bad, though perhaps vendor it came from bought a
lot of seconds (didn't meet quality standards and would've been
thrown away otherwise), though I'd be surprised if they then wore
a Panaflo label at all. Most off-brand fans have deceiving noise
to airflow ratings, Panaflos (and Papst) are two of the highest
flow to noise ratio available.

I have seen fans develop "shutter" when installation screws went
through both "wings", and were over tightened. Fan is then permanently
unbalanced even when uninstalled.

At zero static pressure anyway.

When you say "wings" do you mean the screw holes on both front and back of
fan?

That is what he meant, but often when a bolt is put though entire
frame, both wings, and overtightened, it then flexes entire frame
such that it goes out of round (assuming all weren't
overtightened to exact same amount), with that out-of round frame
potentially being rubbed by the blades. That is far more common
with cheaper fans that have thin, more flexible frame, installed
in hand-made holes that aren't very well centered.

It should be fairly easy to tell if fan balance is ok, just
remove from case and hold it in your hand while running, feeling
the vibration. If you have an extension cord that allows
dangling the fan few inches by the wire then any significant
imbalance will cause a visible wobbling of whole fan.
identaHaving fan out of case will also allow visual inspection to
verify that blades aren't rubbing frame and that none of the
blades are damaged in any way.

This is were I bought the fan.

Don't know if that is reliable vendor or not.

I don't know either. You could look through their user feedback
but that wouldn't be signficant if you were the only person to
have received a defective fan.

I would try another Panaflo from someplace else (not ebay at all,
even though I'm not suggesting all ebay sellers have defective
fans), unless you wanted a clear/glowing fan then the one from
Directron would be one alternative... AFAIK Panaflo makes no
clear fans.

Is there any vendor in particular that you would recommend for an item like
this?

It is very rare to have a defective panaflo, you could buy
anywhere you find a good price.

These have 2-pin connector, you'd have to trim tab off of one for
it to fit motherboard 3-pin header (should be obvious when you
see it).
