Well now that my computer is back up and running I thought i would throw a major annoyance your way. I get a horrible line noise through my speakers. An example would be i can hear the cd rom boot up, so it is something to do with the sheilding inside of the computer case. what I was wondering is...does anyone know of any cables that connect from the soundcard to the motherboard and cd rom that are HEAVLY shielded? If not does anyone have any tricks to limit noise...I have already moved the cables as far away from internal power cables as possible. The only thing i was going to try was lead tape around the wires then electric tape over the lead (just incase lead is a conductor) Sorry if my post is longwinded

Oh yea and ymy sound card is a Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2 and an newer ASUS motherboard (under 6 months new....sorry don't know the model on the motherboard.

thanks again all
Chad

Actually I have a natural talent for trying the most complicated things first, so no, no I haven't different speakers...lol, that would be logical. what is logic???

Do you have a lead from your CD ROM drive to your soundcard?

What operating system are you using and is your motherboard fairly recent?

If you have a fairly modern motherboard and are using Win XP, you shouldn't need that lead, remove it and play some audio from different sources, it should work through the PCI bus. Then see if the noise is still there.

Some flavours of Linux do need that lead though.

Sweet, thanks. I will try that too.
I am running XP pro and have a newer ASUS motherboard, about 6 months old.
So really all i need to do is just plug in the soundcard into the PCI slot?
No cables at all???

Yep :)

*Obligatory nonsensical line to meet post minimum count criteria*

1 other thing - do you have onboard sound - might need to disable it and also unistall any old drivers

my m8 just tried out a sound blaster and - we couldn't hear what he was saying !! - not sure which sound blaster he has - but cost him £50
could also try e-mail them.

Well the good news is I dont have the wires plugged in anymore. but I am still getting noise. Oh well, I have lived with it this long:( Thanks for the ideas though:)

Sorry yeah i did, this is also a newer sound card, cause i had the same problem earlier with a real cheap card so I tried this newer card. so here is the list so far. lol.

no help - new sound card
no help - new speakers
no help - removing the wires from sounds card to cd rom

motherboard? I really dont have any lights or any major power source near my case to interfear with it. kinda baffled.

Thanks again all

Replace the "ribbon cable" with a new one, and make sure its ATA 100/133 rated ... in other words an 80 wire cable.

Better still ... use two ... one for your HD as normal on the master IDE and use a separate one for your CDROM drive using the secondary IDE

If that fails, get some ferite rings, and wrap what cables will fit around them.

:)

some type of interfernce here Coops320,

you are going t o have to eliminate the problem. what about your PC SCREEN? Mobile phone charger?
Try turning these off, it maywell be that it mite not be something directly with your pc.

i know u said that u have not got any major power stuff nearby, but what about the minor power applications?

i got a motorola charger for my mobile, when it is on and plugged in it gives out this horrendus sound on my hifi's radio. its so annoying!
