Nodes keep lossing server connection?

I changed the IP Address to fix A conflict we were having.
Now when ever some one goes to print on a network printer
for example the connection is lost. So I have to rejoin
them onto the the work group and domain? Why do I keep
losing the connection? It is a static IP and the nodes are
XP Pro and the server is W2K.

Should I change the subnet mask form 255.255.255.0 to
255.255.0.0 If I changed my IP addys from xxx.xxx.1.xxx to
xxx.xxx.2.xxx?
