NO_MORE_IRP_STACK_LOCATIONS blue-screen on startup

I have a new computer, ASUS with an Intel core duo processor and SATA
hard drive. I am using a Windows install that was originally on another
system with this hard drive, and have updated the video driver. I have
another partition on the disk (total of 4 partitions) from which I can
re-copy the install to start fresh.

When I first start up Windows 2000 the first time, it starts fine. It
tries to install the LAN driver & I kill that (I've also tried
completing it and it doesn't change things.) It runs fine, and I can
install things and so forth but with some glitches, notably that
add/remove programs is blank, and that I get something acting like it's
installing when I do a copy/paste of files (I do have MSOffice 2003 on
this install which is probably responsible for this last.)

There are no other obvious drivers installing on that first Windows
startup. But then, every time, when I reboot & start Windows again, I get
NO_MORE_IRP_STACK_LOCATIONS" on a blue-screen crash.

I have found very little referring to this error on a comprehensive
search. The actions I've tried so far are:

- Two registry changes recommended by articles addressing this issue
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic
es\lanmanserver\parameters"
and another under MUPS
- Trying to remove the influence of Roxio EZCD/DirectCD version 7 (a
relatively recent version) by changing the name of the Roxio folder,
since I can't use a standard add/remove (due to it coming up blank) and
there isn't an uninstall separately available within the program folder
structure. This does, in fact, work to keep directCD from loading
though I know there could be a Roxio-related "driver" somewhere that is
still loading.
- Refreshing the SP4 installation
- Updating the BIOS to the latest available
- Turning off ACPI in the BIOS; this has the effect of causing it to
show the "Starting Windows" screen with the bar moving across the
bottom, which seems to hit 100% but then just stops (I've waited even
overnight) and never goes past that point. Have also tried all
iterations of ACPI settings available to me.
- Booting to VGA (same crash)
- Disabling on-board LAN & audio.
- Removing the entry for the non-loading LAN driver, or installing the
driver & enabling it
Probably some other things that I've forgotten.

As with every other cite I've found, the computer will boot fine in Safe
Mode with Networking.

Does anyone have any thoughts other than "start from scratch"? It's
frustrating that it works fine on the first boot and then breaks on the
obvious installation of something not visibly reported.

Thanks.

P.S. I can even boot DOS, from my first -- FAT16 -- partition on this
system, without -any- problems!

DE,

From what you said its obvious the installation is initialising with the
wrong drivers

Are there any yellow exclamation marks in device manager? Like
LAN/Soundcard...

You say you took the disk off another machine. Did you strip out all the
SID's like sys preping it?

Does the motherboard have a different chipset requiring a different SATA
driver?

Is the second motherboard take the same SATA devices as the first? Both SATA
I or both SATA II

The add/remove programs being blank can be because of numerous things like a
corrupt registry key or a dll not registered. More info:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/266668

What is the MSI being asked for when you copy/paste? Virus program for
example. The filename should be displayed when you click the browse button

Get the model number of the motherboard & download the drivers from the
manufacturers website. That will solve the PCI bridge or LAN errors & the
correct SATA driver

The stack error is a mystery that could be solved by viewer the errors in
the event log. Event ID's would be very handy to know

Before we can help you, you'll need to do a little more information
gathering

Awaiting your reply,
