I have an old Dell Dimension 4700 computer on which I want to replace the
system disk but Dell did not supply an OS CD.

The OS is: Digital Media Edition XP

1) What does the Digital Media Edition have that Pro does not have.

2) Does the CD for the OS include the Digital Media stuff or is that a
seperate CD.

3) The system came without an OS CD but with a card that looks like a CD
that says to go to support.dell.com/pcrt to learn about obtaining a CD.
Dell must have deleted that page. I could not find what I need on the page
that does show up.
Do you know how I can get a CD or how to proceed.
The system is presently working.

I do have an XP Pro CD from a system no longer in use. No Digiatl Media CD
though.

Thanks

There's no such version as XP Digital Media Edition. Digital Media
Edition was a Plus! Pack of utilities and entertainment apps, separate
from Windows XP. Do you mean XP Media Center Edition?

Open Control Panel> System> General tab.
What does it state in the System: section?

It name is::
Microsoft Windows XP Center Media Edition 2005
Or MCE-XP

The MCE-XP-CD is on the MCE-XP-Hard-Drive

Files AT: DELL_RECOVERY D:\I386

Update Files for sp2 & sp3 + drives at::
C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386

Do you have OS up and running on the Dell+Dimension+4700

files
I need to create an installation CD
Files AT: DELL_RECOVERY D:\I386
My D drive is the CD drive.
The only partition the has a letter is for the C drive
Update Files for sp2 & sp3 + drives at::
C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386
Do you have OS up and running on the Dell+Dimension+4700
Yes and if I do Ctrl + F11 I get a chance to rebuild the OS system.

May related instructions at Dell but I want to replace the hard drive and
there are no instruction for creatuing an installation CD.

Thats what I'd like to do.

Maybe I misunderstood - anyway it simply a Home Edition version 2002

I still need to make an installation CD so that I can replace the system
disk.

Don't know how to do that even though the files are in a third partition on
the existing system disk.

Thanks

Start Windows, look on Start menu> Programs for any Dell entries, and
see if there is a recovery Disc Maker option anywhere. I don't think
there is on the 4700, but have a look.

The 4700 has a hidden restore partition that recovers the system to Day
One on the same hard drive, by holding down the CTRL key and pressing
the F11 key at the same time, at the Dell logo at system boot. So one
option you have is to clone the current system drive to the new drive,
complete with all partitions, then set the new drive as the bootable
drive and run system Recovery from there. If your goal was just to copy
your system to the new drive, you won't need to use the Recovery option
at all, the cloning process will copy your current system as-is.

You can buy a cloning and imaging program, but some drive manufacturer's
offer a free limited version for cloning a drive to their new drive.
For example, Western Digital offers the free Acronis True Image WD
Edition Software to clone to a new Western Digital drive. You would use
the Drive Cloning option to copy all the partitions completely, making
the new drive identical to the old.

If you insist on an XP CD, you will have to locate and buy one on eBay
or elsewhere, then download and install all the Dell drivers for the
4700 from the Dell Support site, after the Windows installation.

In addition to my reply of a few minutes ago, you could also try to find
a Dell Reinstallation CD on eBay. You would have to make sure you
selected exactly the same version of Windows as your COA sticker shows
on the side of the computer... XP Home or XP Pro or XP Media Center
Edition. I'm not sure if the same Service Pack level is needed.
